MUST-SEE: Four Corners probes Liberals on climate change

420malcolm-turnbull-420x0 Former Victorian ALP state secretary Stephen Newnham and former Liberal senior staffer and master-strategist Rick Brown have teamed up to form a strategic analysis and polling company CPI Strategic. They’ve certainly hitting the ground running, apparently playing a role in a story on Four Corners tonight analysing polling in the context of the programme exploring the Liberal party’s response to climate change.

The Libs – like Labor – are struggling to deal with both the science and politics of what was once called global-warming. The gap between enviro enthusiasts – mainly in the inner-city – and those worried about the job-destroying effects of emissions taxes and trading systems has never been greater. While Rudd is able to crack the whip reasonably effectively on the issue because of the benefits of being in government, Turnbull doesn’t have the same authority and has quite the rebellion on his hands among Liberal patriots who think that climate change is being used as a weapon by the environment movement to achieve outcomes that would otherwise never even be considered. They have a point.

Should be a very interesting show.

  1. One of the main reasons that both major parties are having problems dealing with climate change is that neither have any belief that there is any climate change!

Being a science-based issue, no pollie has any clear understanding of the issue in the ALP or Liberal Party. There is a reliance on second-hand info from staffers who get a hotch-potch of science from various “experts”.

I hate to say it but it is an issue that the Greens have a better handle on….and that’s a clear indication how out of touch both parties are!

  2. I was going to say the same as Clingwrap but in the context of the statement ‘Rudd is able to crack the whip reasonably effectively on the issue because of the benefits of being in government’… I don’t think being in government has much to do with it… its a bit hard for Turnbull to be cracking any whips when he and the Liberal party have their heads buried so deep in the sand we’ll shortly be able to pump ground water directly from their anal passages.
At least Rudd pays lip service to science even if his policies are somewhat pre-enlightenment.

  4. Personally I reckon the science to show there is any global warming caused by humans is very thin.

That said, I would still favour a world with less pollution.

  7. Anonymous, your first sentence I totally agree with – the REAL evidence on the ground is in fact OPPOSITE to there being a causal link between anthropogenically produced atmospheric CO2 and so-called global warming.

But I, too, agree with your sentiment that less pollution would be fine – particularly REAL pollutants like SO2, NO2, N2O, H2S etc, etc, etc. But PLEASE remember, CO2 is NOT a pollutant – without it, you will NEVER grow a tree, or harvest a grain field! And also please remember that EVERY time a human exhales, we breath out a fair load of good old CO2.

It (CO2) is an essential gas in the human condition AND the photosynthesis process, so let’s stop this talk about CO2 being a pollutant.

The tide is starting to turn on this early 21st Century hoax/swindle. Sometime soon, thiose who promulgated the AGW theory are going to be seeking a place to hide. Away from the wrath of those long suffering taxpayers and citizens they have been both scaring witless with the supposed predicted impending catastrophic end of the planet, and who they have been endeavouring to completely deceive.

    Cheers,
    Observer.

  8. Observer,

I agree, the science just isnt there to demonstrate a link between industrialisation and any global warming, in fact global warming hasnt been proved either.

My comment about being less pollution, I was thinking about at the time a coal fired power station – what chemicals it must release.

In a utopian world I would like to see less chemicals pumped into the atmosphere but we need to find ways to do this that doesn’t lead to the average citizen being bent over yet again.

  19. I’m getting sick of various idiots (particularly Greens) getting up and screaming out that “climate change” is real, when they have no scientific background. True scientists would realise that “climage change” is a theory, not a fact. No scientific theory can ever be proven – it may well be disproven tomorrow. However, you can say that there is strong evidence suggesting that the theory it is true (and so policy should be based around that).

It’s time we had a few more pollies who come from a scientific background, especially given environmental issues the nation faces.

  26. Observer: Actually, you’re incorrect. Any substance that is present in an environment abnormally, or in abnormal quantities/concentrations, is a pollutant to that environment.

    Hence, CO2 is a pollutant.

Spud: You may want to check your definition of “theory”, given that in science, a theory is as close to a fiat accompli as you can get.

Unless all you bastards have a scientific background to rest upon, you don’t really have the qualifications to say “AGW isn’t real”.

  38. One day “Climate Science” will rank with “Creation Science” in its obvious stupidity.

Then again, at least Creationists act out of faith. Those trough-swilling pseudo-academic sciangelists on last night’s Four Corners episode had as much trouble hiding their self interest as a lighthouse does hiding its beam. Hmmm. Unless the beam has been changed to those totally useless, but “environment friendly” fluorescent fittings.

Let’s take those heads of climate institutes, sustainability institutes and all the other temples of fakery and make them personally liable for the damage done by their scare-mongering. A lien over their houses and rich superannuation and we’ll soon see how dedicated they are!

  48. Here’s a way to understand Rudd’s Carbon ETS tax and the junk science on which it’s based:

Imagine 1 kilometre of atmosphere that we want to rid of human carbon pollution,. We’ll have a walk along it.

The first 770 metres are nitrogen.

The next 210 metres are oxygen.

That’s 900 metres of the 1 kilometre. 20 metres to go.

The next 10 metres are water vapour. 10 metres left.

9 metres are argon. Just 1 more metre.

The last 38 centimetres of the kilometre – that’s carbon dioxide.

    A bit over one foot.

97% of that is produced by Mother Nature. It’s natural.

Out of our journey of one kilometre, there are just 12 millimetres left. About half an inch. Just over a centimetre.

That’s the amount of carbon dioxide that global human activity puts into the atmosphere.

And of those 12 millimetres Australia puts in .18 of a millimetre.

Less than the thickness of a hair. Our of a kilometre.

For that, Australian farmers will lose about $11000 per year in income and dairy farms in particular have $10,000 per year added to their energy costs. All of which will be added to the cost of our food. The scheme will cost 7,500 mining jobs in NSW and Queensland and 6,000 in WA. Australian mining companies are also liable for carbon produced by overseas mines which they own.

Is it amazing we can sit in an Electoral office that is paid for by the Tax Payer all day and night sending things into a Blog site!!

  82. Alex that’s not fair to say those things. You told me I have a good tongue.
You told me Mark would have to lick me when I am the member for Baulkham Hills.
I hope Wayne does not find out that you have promised the seat to me.
Now we are back on this again, trying to remember who you have promised the seats to.
    I am confused.

  83. “The lovechild of Michael Davis” I wasn’t the person who wrote the piece you were commenting on. I put my name to 100% of what I write (often this gets me in trouble but who cares). I applaud ANYONE who goes into public life regardless of who they are and as a proud Liberal I support ANY and ALL Liberal councilors wherever they may be. So your point is ludicrous.

I won’t dignify the comments re. Chad and Craig.

On the issue of being a bludger though as I have said before, I am proud to be a carer, but resent it being portrayed as a bludge job by people like you and then there is my paid employment in the private sector as well on top of that, the engine room of our economy no less.

As I say don’t judge what you don’t understand and may you never have to care for one you love in a full-time capacity, it’s stressful, poorly-paid and the support you get is never enough, even though it is often rewarding and always appreciated by the only person who really matters, the care recipient.

    Regards,

    Michael Davis.

  97. I wish to reply to the comments from the despicable person who uses the “Concerned” pseudonym above.

You asked when Alex Hawke will speak out against an ETS, my answer is that he already has. You can watch his speech from June 2009 on youtube.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANELdLAtNRA

“every scientific report that I read is conflicted”

“it is something we want to replicate without a punitive and harsh emissions trading scheme that will threaten so many jobs within this country.”

If you’d like to read more from Alex Hawke you can go here to read his most recent speech on the matter (OCTOBER)

    http://www.openaustralia.org/debates/?id=2009-10-28.73.2&s=speaker%3A10290#g95.1

“From the outset I want to make it very clear that I am strongly opposed to what I regard as the Rudd government’s proposals to implement a carbon tax, a new and complex tax in my view that will add to the size and scope like no other measure in Commonwealth history.”

“What we know is that the government’s emissions trading scheme is deeply flawed. I accept today that it is true that many people are caught up in the idea that an ETS could solve a perceived problem with climate change caused by humans. It is a thesis that I want to reject today in a number of ways…”

Alex Hawke has a record which puts the Taliban to shame because the taliban only care about stacking out Young Liberal branches and leaking lies to Imre Salusinszky.

    Crime doesn’t pay boys.

  98. As per usual, there are CONVIENIENT Truths???? coming out of the office of the member for Mitchell.
How can any person in the community believe anything that comes out of that office, amazes me.
The hypocrisy of this person Alex Hawke is stunning, he congratulated the ex-mayor of Baulkham Hills Sony Phillips in Federal Parliament and previously, he was condemning her.
Please look up the following link:
    http://www.aph.gov.au/hansard/reps/dailys/dr190309.pdf

Now he is condemning Climate Change? Can you believe him, I don’t.
Will he condemn, then applaud the boat people next?

Most of the people in his electorate don’t believe him anymore.
He lost a great margin from 20% plus to 9% in the last Federal election in 2007.
A margin the Honorable Alan Cadman had gained after 30 years representing the community not his faction of 1.

I don’t believe Hawke and neither should you.

  101. “Carl Johnson”

Are you some sort of idiot?

i am sick of reading this blog and seeing lots of posts “accredited ” to me.

I have better things to do then post on this website.

If you really want to be cynical. look at the time that “i” posted. 254pm. Funny thing is is that at 254pm i was sitting outside an exam room waiting for my 3pm exam.

    You are all pathetic.

Grow up and stop fighting each other under the disguise of anonymity and blaming me for all the posts.

Regardless to what you may actually think, i have better things to do then plot and post on here. I know some of you (and you know who you are) have big egos and think i have nothing better to do then waste my time on here. Well you are wrong.

    All of you should :

1.) Stop posting on here, you are doing nothing to help the party all you are doing is causing further damage and the media love to feast on internal conflict. Please keep in mind we actually have a Federal election coming up next year and a state election the year after that. You all think you are high and mighty but did it ever occur to you that one day perhaps the site will hand over the IP Addresses associated with accounts to the lib party and that they could then mirror those up to logins onto the members section of the liberal party site and thus identify who really has said things that break party rules?

2.) Did you also ever think that we actually do have to try and get along and put aside your petty differences and work together to achieve victory on polling day. Or do you all just not care about that? I mean just because some of you are incompetent (and we know who you are – you really should talk to people before you outright attack them) doesn’t mean you have to bring yourself down as well as the party by posting on here.

You all say you want to boost party recruitment and get the party to interact with the local community, if you want to achieve that you need to behave like civil human beings and set a good example.

At the moment you are all failing at that, making a huge embarassment of the party and doing nothing to help our electoral chances and you are annoying the heck out of me by making dodgy posts and then blaming me for them.

    Seriously get over ourselves

and stop doing it, if not for me, then for the party, for our future.

    Chad Sidler

Thanks for the lecture, Chad. However, when you personally post the remarks about someone’s wife as you continue to do, it just reinforces to everyone that you are a stupid little c%&# with no life or friends. Remember, there are other ways to detect people’s posts on here, not just IP addresses.

  112. If nothing else this factional battle will be a boon for the party’s war chest and hence will help us win the NSW election.

Every stack has to pay a membership fee which is far higher than the direct costs associated with keeping that member.

The moral of this story is that at least on a financial level a factional battle is not all bad news.
