Rick Wallace at the sensationally newly good-looking Australian reports (off-line):
THE Victorian ALP has recruited a well-regarded official from the party’s national office to run its leg of the federal campaign, in another sign Labor is expecting big gains in the state when the election is called.
Staffer Nathan Lambert has been hired to direct the national campaign in Victoria, where the ALP is hopeful of picking up the marginal seats of La Trobe and McEwen and perhaps others.
ALP sources said the party was looking at Victoria and South Australia as the key battlegrounds to provide gains for Labor. The party was expecting to make little headway in NSW because it was expected to wear some collateral damage over the failures of the state government.
Queensland, which swung heavily to Labor last time, is also expected to be a tough battleground for the ALP, although the redistribution of Peter Dutton’s seat of Dickson offers at least an opportunity for one gain.
The Labor Party has moved to an “acquisitional” rather than defensive footing in Victoria, and the engagement of Mr Lambert is another sign it believes several gains are possible on the current polling figures.
Mr Lambert’s appointment also allows state secretary Nick Reece to concentrate on restoring unity in the divided Victorian branch and on the state election in November next year.
Mr Lambert has previously worked at Victorian ALP headquarters, where he set up some of its database systems for campaigning before he was recruited to the federal office.
Mr Reece confirmed the importance of Victoria in the federal fight and said Mr Lambert, who had also been made an assistant secretary, would help ensure a professional and effective federal campaign.
“Nathan Lambert has a reputation inside the ALP as being one of the best data analysts in the country,” Mr Reece said.
The freezing of preselections in the Victorian Liberal-held seats of La Trobe and McEwen, revealed in The Australian in September, is another sign the party is confident of gains.
Sources said the preselections were put off to widen the pool of potential candidates. The ALP’s national executive is expected to meet later this month to make rulings on preselections that are still outstanding.
Patriots advise that campaign wizard George Droutsas has departed Head Office after accepting a redundancy payout, in addition to recent departures of NUW aligned assistant secretary Lisa Carey and her astute boss Stephen Newnham. Lambert is seen as aligned to the socially conservative and highly patriotic retail SDA union, although perhaps its coolest living member.
Droutsas is believed to be currently working on one of the three feuding Labor Right HSU campaigns and is thought likely to return to the private sector where he has received multiple offers from PR and ad agencies. In the event his team wins the HSU ballot, he would be expected to be offered a job there, perhaps directing their communications strategy in an attempt to reverse the collapse in union membership in recent years.
Its good to be back – I really hope Johnno doesn’t bring in a Bonking Tax or Smart Meters on my bedhead otherwise I will find it very expensive to be back in Melbourne!!
The government has hit back at Senator Conroy’s assertions, claiming the Labor maps have been “doctored by a company owned by a former Labor staffer”.
The maps are copyrighted to Subrepublic which, the Coalition says, is owned by Nathan Lambert, a former Victorian ALP IT worker.
“Labor has simply ordered [the company's owner] to prepare phoney maps of the Coalition’s broadband plan and then pretended that they have been produced by an independent source,” Coonan said in a statement
Conroy is stealing Telstra. Time this went to the High Court.
Mr Lambert, who had also been made an assistant secretary, would help ensure a professional and effective federal campaign.
Bring on the pants man!
Lambert is a good choice. Clearly a sign that the new brooms (Reece and Carroll) are sweeping clean. The addition of Lambert to this team will augment a combination of talent, strategic and political nouse to the Victorian ALP.
carroll is a dud, a lame duck candidate, who’ll never be state secretary…
All three boys are cute even though they are in the ALP, I would to invite them to my favourite bath house to play nude leap frog.
