HYPOCRITE: Nathan Rees was willing to live by the sword but whines when he could die by it

nathanrees Malcolm Turnbull tried it. And now it’s the discredited Premier of NSW Nathan Rees giving it a good go. Their secret sauce:

Win over the latte sippers as best you can. Then adopt a disloyal “scorched Earth” strategy to attempt to make a true victory for your opponents impossible.

Hypocrite lefty Nathan Rees was installed by NSW Labor Right numbers-men Eddie Obeid and Joe Tripodi.

They dumped Morris Iemma because he was championing long overdue state government asset sales. It was clearly in retrospect a grave error in judgment. Iemma was certainly struggling in the polls and struggling to maintain internal discipline but he was a vastly better Premier than the man who replaced him.

Today – desperate to hang on to his chauffeured limousine and big office – the same Nathan Rees says he “would not hand the government of New South Wales to Obeid, Tripodi or Sartor.”

But presumably that’s exactly what he did by being their candidate in the first place. Until he ratted on them.

Adding insult to injury are reports that various senior Left faction operatives had loudly claimed their faction had taken over the NSW government by reason of their ability to dispense with Right faction ministers at will.

It was inevitable from that point on that the normal rigours of accountability would be applied to the Rees premiership. He’s failed on any basic measure of performance. Failed to lift the government in the polls and failed to inspire a sense of teamwork and espirt de corps in his colleagues.

He’s been singing to the Press Gallery and the inner-city. They all expected the public would be so very impressed by him dumping Tripodi. There was no “bounce” in the polls, knifing the man who put him in the job had no effect other than provoking even more contempt from his party colleagues.

The numbers are probably there to remove Rees, not because Eddie Obeid or Joe Tripodi are by some miraculous process able to control the minds of adult, free-thinking Labor moderates in the NSW state caucus but because he’s let them down.

His has been an administration by gimmick. He’s purported to ban donations from developers, despite it being perfectly clear that the proposed law would not be legally effective.

His Left faction has attempted to make the most of Rees’s premiership by taking seats from the Right.

Pride precedes the fall, the Good book tells us, and Rees’s departure cannot come too soon.

If he continues on, it will be because the NSW MPs have been successfully bullied by a desperate man who stands for nothing but disloyalty and ineffective gimmicks.

We could hardly imagine anyone else doing worse.

  1. Unfortunately, the situation isn’t a simple Left v Right matter. It goes far deeper.

NSW Labor is infected with a corrupt influence which Rees referred to, in fact he named them in his press conference. Until NSW Labor can cut out the disease, it is bound for electoral doom.

Rees has shown leadership and real backbone. Sure, he did have Tripodi and Obeid behind him when Iemma went, but to call Rees a hypocrit for wanting to clean up and save a government that is paralysed with infighting, secret deals and people more focused on their own Ministerial salary than the community of NSW is a gross inaccuracy.

Rees is a decent, honest person and if he does not prevail in the meeting today, Labor in NSW is finished for at least a decade.

  2. Can they find someone who can unite the party and also govern effectively?
Appears to be difficult as they have had too many failures.

  3. If any of that bad bunch had any integrity whatsoever they would pass a vote of no confidence in themselves and have an election called.

Of course, the absence of even a scintilla of integrity precludes this happening. The voters will cast their judgement in time, but not soon enough.

  12. Ladies and gentlemen,

Fifteen months ago, I was called upon by my party to take the leadership in difficult circumstances.

I did so knowing that my experience in public life was limited and that I did not hail from the factional group that had traditionally supplied leaders of the state parliamentary Labor Party.

But I accepted the call to serve and was elected to the leadership without dissent.

Others had the chance to stand.

    But no one did.

As a result, I was chosen by my party, at that time unanimously.

Since that time I have given my all for the people of NSW.

Working for their needs and aspirations has been my sole intention.

And it has guided my every action.

And over the past 15 months, we have secured some great achievements for the families of NSW:

    - The best on-time rail running in a decade.

    - The nation’s best literacy and numeracy results.

    - 6000 public sector apprenticeships and traineeships.

    - A training guarantee for all 17 year olds.

    - The nation’s most generous solar rebate scheme.

    - And sweeping reform of our FOI laws.

And before recent events intervened I was intending today to launch the Government’s transport blueprint, a fully-funded $180 billion plan for Sydney’s and NSW’s transport needs for the next 30 years.

But instead of talking policy, here we are talking leadership once again.

And I say this, that the time for talking is over.

    Ladies and gentlemen,

Throughout the past 15 months, my ability to do good has been impaired at every turn.

A malign and disloyal group well known to the NSW community has made the business of government almost impossible.

The presence of such a group within the nation’s oldest and proudest political party is intolerable.

Their treachery and disloyalty can be borne no longer.

For that reason, I embarked three weeks ago on a campaign to clean up NSW politics and break the hold of these malignant forces on the public life of our state.

In that effort, I received the unanimous support of the NSW Labor Party conference and its senior officials as well as the endorsement of four Labor premier predecessors.

In response to my actions, I have received a torrent of emails and letters and personal greetings from the people of NSW each reaffirming the rightness of my decisions.

    Those people can rest assured:

    I will not waver.

    And I will not falter.

Let this be made abundantly clear:

I am determined to clean up politics in NSW.

I am determined to restore integrity to government in NSW.

    More than that.

I swore an oath of loyalty to the people of NSW, an oath of loyalty and an oath of service.

And I say to them today:

I will not hand the government of NSW over to Obeid, Tripodi or Sartor.

Under my leadership, there will be no going back.

The old regime will never again dictate the fortunes of our party, nor will they regain the levers of control.

I will lead one sort of government and one sort of government only: a government that is modern, ethical and progressive, a government in which the people of NSW can have confidence, trust and respect.

Those are my standards and those are my beliefs.

They are my standards. They are my beliefs. I will settle for nothing less.

Should I not be Premier by the end of this day, let there be no doubt in the community’s mind, no doubt, that any challenger will be a puppet of Eddie Obeid and Joe Tripodi.

    That is the reality.

That is the choice at stake today.

The decision now lies in the hands of my caucus colleagues.

    Thank you.

  52. Dear Andrew,

Thank you for using proper English metaphor. However I note you have said that the left faction had, “added insult to injury”.

Insult on to injury implies a series of events wherein the Left were injured and then had more pain inflicted upon them. In this instance, their pain was as a result of their own statements made PRIOR to the events current. It is therefore more accurately described as an act of hubris rather than as insult heaped upon injury.

    Regards,

    Your sub-editor.

  65. The nsw ALP continues to give us a long parade of sloppy amatuer operators.

Rees turing up for work as a Minister the day after his puppet remarks is a great reminder to all nsw voters that the puppet show continues – the conga line of nobodies continues.

The NSW public became immune to the perception and reality of political corruption and sleaze many years ago – the difference is that today’s NSW ALP cannot even manage the basic pretence of public administration.

Western Sydney in particular is a forgotten wasteland of social neglect.

It is hard to see how another nsw nobody will address this – and despite Rees’ new found loyalty the fact is he has already given the Liberals that most damagingly potent ‘puppet’ sound bite to be used again and again at the next election.

His final dummy spit as Premier has already put the final nail in the nsw alp coffin.

Why can’t NSW ALP recuit some better talent?

The cast from FAT PIZZA could do a better job.
