TRAM OF TERROR: Gang of Melbourne youths vandalise tram, throw missiles at passing cars, terrorise passengers
On Saturday evening a group of ten youths believed to be from the Melbourne suburb of Glenroy went on a crime spree while riding a tram from Highpoint West shopping centre to Moonee Ponds.
In the space of ten minutes they vandalised the tram, ripping out a number of the green passenger handles, threw a number of those solid objects at passing cars, verbally attacked passengers who’d asked them to behave loudly calling one elderly woman passenger a “c*nt” and yelled out viciously racist comments at Indian students.
The youths – of Mediterranean appearance – were dressed in faux American gangster garb with one of them wearing a fake Louis Vuitton belt buckle with fake diamonds.
Despite their comical appearance, passengers told VEXNEWS they were terrified by the violent display.
The tram driver told our informant that he was unable to do anything about gangs like this because if he stopped the tram or told them off, he’d fear being attacked himself.
They appeared to have no sense of fear, with one of the drivers whose car they’d thrown missiles at taking photographs of them. While a couple pulled their hoods up, a number of them posed for the camera wielding driver, complete with hostile hand-gestures.
The louts were unaware they were being filmed by a displeased passenger, the vision has been forwarded to Victoria Police.

Lazy reportage resulting in abject nonsense. Melbourne readers deserve serious news, not this tenuous flim-flam.
In the early 1950s Toorak resident and 3UZ radio announcer John Pacini claimed that little boys living in Northcote were flouting power restrictions (with power outages caused by Communist unions calling strikes) and that these little boys not turning lights out were making life miserable for industry and everyone else. Translated this meant wealthy residents of Toorak.
Pacini ecouraged a lot of anti-social behaviour. He once said the only good communist was a dead communist (but he encouraged communist unions by his puerile rants). If he lived now he’s be a One Nation supporter.
Pacini has his heirs now, who enourage anti-social and racist behaviour. Pacini targeted lower class whites who lived in Northcote. If he were alive today he’d target Indians, like the louts on that tram.

All he needed to do was radio for the police and slow the tram down.

Why is everyone getting excited about this minor issue. They are only expressing their Human Rights with Rob Hulls’ blessings. Anarchy, the long term success of the Bracks/Brumby Govt.
Andy, there is certainly a market for reportage with the moving image for this sort of news. While there have always been naughty little ‘wog’ boys, there is something awry in social fabric with prevelance of so many violent incidents from young men and it is worth exploring. Lots of taxpayer dollars are spent on addressing this visible issue but not of the root causes. It just can’t be alcohol and testoserone.
Manual-labour intensive industries like manufacturing have declined since the 70s. 20-odd years ago these kids would have gone to a tech school until they were 15 then headed to respectable blue collar apprenticeships and lives.
Now they are shoe-horned into a stay-at-school/”knowledge worker” labour model that doesn’t fit.
The result: dismal myspace/ipod fodder with no brains and too much testosterone.
I fail to see how this is newsworthy – this sort of thing is quite common on public transport, particularly trams where the hooligans know they can run off easily in the unlikely event of the police attending. Just do a trawl of vic.crimestoppers.com.au and look for the keyword tram or public transport.
