DEAD TED: Victorian Liberal leader lucks out

redtedLamentable Liberal leader Ted Baillieu has had one of those weeks.

This week saw The Australian’s Newspoll reveal that despite earnest efforts to boost his standing that the Victorian public are still finding it very hard to love the Victorian party leader whose embrace of odd left-wing policy positions continues to baffle observers.

tedknockingonWhere Baillieu’s been strongest has been on law and order – a traditional conservative strength – where he’s positioned the straight-talking former criminal defence lawyer Peter Ryan as their Police spokesman.

But as The Australian’s astute state political reporter Rick Wallace points out, Baillieu undermines himself by being inconsistent on those issues and on everything else:

But just weeks after promising zero tolerance on civil disobedience, the opposition spent a week of parliament in pursuit of the government over measures designed to help police control protests against major projects. Granted, there were privacy and civil liberties implications in the proposals, but the government and police backpedalled and ruled out giving protesters’ personal details to project constructors.

In a bid to bag Police Minister Bob Cameron’s scalp, the opposition pursued the issue for a week, but left some conservatives wondering whose side the opposition was on: the protesters or the police.

To make matters worse, long-time Baillieu foe Michael Kroger has had a very belated crack at the lack of renewal in party room ranks and expressed his grave concern at the Newspoll numbers which show – in theory at least – that the Libs could go backwards at the next election. No one in the government believes that likely but the polls should be enough to get the party room sharpening its axe in favour of country member Terry Mulder or Dr Denis Napthine.

Kroger ought to have laid down the law during the preselections in the held seats, not now it’s too late, Kroger aligned insiders told VEXNEWS.

The most convincing way for him to have done this was to put himself forward for a state seat, Kroger would not be an uncontroversial leadership contender but he’d be a credible one. As would notional factional foe John Roskam of the IPA. But the Liberals have failed at persuading their deadweight to roll on and their thought-leaders like Kroger and Roskam to step up and serve. It’s time that was corrected, certainly in Roskam’s case.

While all that was going on, post Chanukah and pre Christmas revellers at the European this afternoon observed the usually little-noticed Tory leader Red Ted struggling to get into his bunker at 157 Spring Street, opposite state Parliament House.

His pass didn’t work. The door was locked. No-one would or could let him inside.

Perhaps an omen. The Ides of March looms.

  1. What is needed is the return of candidates who will upgold the Menzies Dream.

What is needed are sheep who will not be afraid to bite the sheep dog.

To not bite the sheep dog is to betray the Menzies Dream.

  4. I said ‘…looks like…’ not ‘…is definately at…’, but poor old Ted needs some big cash to win over some new friends. I don’t think we are a winner for 2010 somehow…

  6. So the long and the short of it is that Baillieu did not unveil his ‘plan’ to win. Could that possibly be because he doesn’t have one?

  7. The Libs are dead in the water , Ryan is the only one that has some go and Ted will not shut him up.

  8. Kroger can talk about renewal all he wants, but he needs to put his money where his mouth is and run, or shut up.

  9. He was dropping by the ATM so he could get some $$$$ to pay for all the organic, free-trade, carbon neutral beers he was buying for his latte sipping homo mates at the very avant guarde European wine bar.

  10. My dear Rt Hon Lord (Mayor) Fatty Doyle, the dearest of all dear fatties.

I wish yourself and the delightful EPC all the blessings of this Christmas Season.

I thank you for the European Whiskey you sent me. It will be put to good use. It is, afterall, a human right to consume copious amounts of European Whiskey – wouldn’t you agree?

It seems it is only a matter of time until Ted begs you (and me and Honeypot – but not Dr Dean) to come back and lead the Victorian Division to victory.

I look forward to A-G Hulls’ Charter being rolled out across the country – this will be great for my human rights practice when I return to the Bar in a few years time.

In 2010 I hope that I am made silk. I can’t understand why I am continuously overlooked. I could understand if my current state of in absentia from the Bar whilst in San Fran meant that I was not eligible, but Dr Dean assures me that this is not a barrier to consideration (he mentioned something about the Law of the Jungle and the Law of Trade Secrets – to be honest I couldn’t understand his reasoning, the animal noises he was making were a distraction from his otherwise lucid prose).

Nevertheless, I look forward to many blessings and opportunities to defend human rights and drink European Whiskey in 2010 for the both of us.

  11. Surely we can all see that Ted is trying to get into the bottle shop. I am sure he is trying to get a drink because he read the latest opinion polls.

  13. I dont see any change in leader and the lack of alternatives is an indictment of the lack of renewal over many terms.

There hasnt been any substantial renewal of Liberal Parliamentary stocks unless you count David Morris (Mornington / Kennett faction), Edward O’Donohugh (Eastern Vic / Krogerite), Murray Thompson (Sandy / Krogerite), as renewal.

Some of the renewal wont kick in until the new preselection rules impact sitting members (they were exempted as the price for their support) in what was notable bi factional reform.

I dont see the policy leadership coming from many on the front bench. David Davis is one example who when on planning and environment has only platitudes. I dont see any alternative policy being sharpely defined except perhaps on governance – winning over Paul Austin is a nice start but it wont win the election.

  16. Renewal! Renewal! There is still some ‘renewal’ going on!

For instance an ex-Liberal member for Mordialloc has been seen a few times ‘renewing
his youth’ with a new Mayoress in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. One would
need to question whether the ex-member has had a chance yet to look at the face of his
‘current project’ or has other protruding parts been at front of mind?

Ahh so much arrogance and so little brains. They certainly make a great unit.

  17. If Kroger is so important and influential – why isn’t he in Parliament as Leader? Does he just prefer his job as Leader of the ‘I do everything I can to keep Brumby in power because I’d rather support Labor than Ted Ballieu’ faction of the Liberal party?

I’d vote for Ballieu or Kroger or the local dog catcher if they were a Liberal with the Party’s future in mind. Instead I stare (in despair) at a bunch of Liberal loonies who spend more time hating and destroying each other rather than using their talents and energy to get rid of Dumby.

  19. Kroger is of course right – he almost always is – about the problem but not the cure. By the way, everyone knows Kroger is right about the problem (which is deeper than Ted being leader) even if they disagree withhow he raises these issues.

We need the gutless State lib MPs to put Ted out of his misery. Anyone else would be better.

The real issue is we need renewal. At least 12 of MPs need to resign so they can be replaced by people with some energy – they can’t be forced so it’s up to their own integrity to do so.

  36. Peter Allan the former Whitehorse Clowncillor would make a good leader of the Liberal Party. Ted could resign and Peter could then replace him in Hawthorn, then Peter could lead the Libs to victory at the next state election. Peter has the gift of the gab and sound Liberal credentials. He supported Phil Baressi federally last time. He’d be a great state leader for the Libs.

  39. The Liberal party in Victoria is an absolute basket case.
Led by a Left, small ‘l’ liberal who, of course, like his mates Hockey,Turnbull, Alex Hawke,Nick Campbell et al, is indistinguishable from Labor.
He alienates the Conservative base who recognise he stands for nothing, save a perverse idea of freedom.

  41. Time to go? I agree with some on your list “Deadwood and Lightweight Patrol” but I will give my reasons why they should go or stay.

Louise Asher – yes lazy old mole, adds nothing to the political debate.
Martin Dixon – no but should not be a frontbencher. MArtin is a good local MP and not everyone can be on the front bench. Is very good at buttering up the old Tory trouts on the Peninsula.
Christine Fyffe – yes old and useless.
Nick Kotsiras yes not so old but useless and vile breath!
Andrew McIntosh – yeah I suppose, started with so much potential but quite ordinary.
Ken Smith – no, old as he may be, noone works his electorate like Ken.
Murray Thompson -Yes doesn’t have he dear old dads carisma and has added nothing.
Heidi Victoria – don know her.
Bruce Atkinson – no, very good strategically and has a lot to offer behind the scenes.
Andrea Coote – going anyway, but how can you dislike Andrea?
David Davis – yes an appalling creature, no integrity, no honesty. The cancer of the Liberal Party.
    Philip Davis – yep!
David Koch – no, still very good on the ground in Western Vic.
Jan Kronberg – don’t know enough about her.
Wendy Lovell – Yes adds nothing.
Donna Petrovich – No, again has disgusting breath like her lower House colleague Nick but does work.
Inga Peulich – the BIGGEST yes I can muster (no pun) a fu…ing disgrace.
    Let me add one more.
Bernie Finn, the Righ To Life member who helped abduct baby M all those years ago. This is without any doubt Parliaments vilest creature and should be removed.

  45. To Deadwood and Lightweight Patrol and politicalrealist … I agree with most of what you say, but have my own observations:

Louise Asher – Agreed, time to go.
Martin Dixon – The party can’t afford to pre-select ‘good backbenchers’ at this point in time. So should go.
Christine Fyffe – Agreed, time to go.
Nick Kotsiras – Agreed, time to go.
Andrew McIntosh – Sorry, but no potential at all. Time to go.
Ken Smith – Again, the party can’t afford to pre-select good backbenchers. Those people will come with government in marginal and currently ALP held seats.
Murray Thompson -Agreed, time to go.
Heidi Victoria – A waste of a seat. Should go.
Bruce Atkinson – How can he be good strategically when the the party is in the position that it is. So must go.
Andrea Coote – Don’t know her.
David Davis – Don’t know him.
Philip Davis – Agreed, time to go.
David Koch – Don’t know him.
Jan Kronberg – Don’t know her.
Wendy Lovell – Agreed, time to go.
Donna Petrovich – Agreed, time to go.
Inga Peulich – Agreed, time to go.
    Let me add one more.
Bernie Finn – maybe should stay just to add a bit of energy and drive to the party.
