REBEL YELL: Luba Grigorovitch boosted by NUW backing in Altona
The rebel NUW led faction of the Victorian Labor Right are believed to have declared their support for rebel Left preselection candidate for Altona, Luba Grigorovitch.
The Hobson’s Bay councillor has – according to locals – door-knocked fiercely through the pathetically small number of branch members and will go in to Wednesday’s ballot with convincing levels of support, locals say.
With nominations closing today for the preselection, it is almost certain that the young councillor will face off against the Premier’s pick, former Party President Jill Hennessy.
Hennessy’s backers in the leadership of the Socialist Left – with both Carr and Griffin strongly supporter her – are hoping that local lefty hard-heads will be sufficient in number to give Jill enough votes to prevail with the Socialist Left and Labor Unity’s support on the POSC.
Luba’s local army swears it has 80% of the votes in the bag, but this does seem unlikely.
The NUW group, including the SDA and forces aligned with Senator David Feeney, are desperate to break up the “stability deal” between the SL and Labor Unity and seem willing to disrupt any process even if it inconveniences occasional allies and Strangers’ Corridor chat-buddies in the Griffin part of the Left.
They are not supporting Luba because of her good looks and charm, however unchallenged those attributes may be.
It’s an example of just how precarious that group’s position can be. Being an agent for disruption can be amusing but also weakens the relationships they have with the Griffin Left and within the Premier’s office where they seem to have more barrackers than the average cheer squad. It leaves the latter group looking a little embarrassed and struggling for explanations.
Some had thought that the Premier’s old chum, former Senator Robert Ray who had become a lobbyist at CPR Communications had influenced JB into regretting his support for the stability deal.
This Altona situation, where the Premier and his office are backing in Jill Hennessy, arguing she is the most accomplished of the available candidates, highlights that in almost every situation stability and certainty is exactly what the Leader wants. Preferably a stability and certainty they are imposing themselves.
The NUW group, bristling with talent in the state caucus with ministers Holding, Pallas and Pakula emerging as some of its strongest performers, has a contradiction to manage.
As their parliamentary talent rises to the very top, they will increasingly want to be part of the leadership group. When their organisational representatives outside of Spring Street make it easy for them to be sledged as wreckers and agents of disruption, it no doubt makes all three of the rising stars very nervous indeed.

If the general population want Luba – and they obviously do (both Labor & non Labor voters elected her on Council in a history making win on first preferences alone) then why not giver her a go! Other Labor supported candidates seeking election on her council with her did not even get elected, let alone “wipe the floor” with her mature, educated opponents the way she did! She is already an experienced campauigner that has proved her worth. We should be worrying about keeping the vote in the area for Labor, not fighting over trying to parachute someone in!

Basic labor and human values are noted for their absence on this website and in the modern ALP elite and in whatever dodgy arrangements currently pass for democracy in the ALP.

Princess Luba as she is locally known takes her orders from John Ballestrino who works for Kosky and is the faceless Don of the Altona ALP branch. If she gets the nod, the ALP is screwed.
Luba has never had a real job. She’s only ever been employed in Lyn Kosky’s office. She shouldn’t be even considered for pre selection until she’s been out in the big wide world for awhile.
Luba’s never really been a real councillor, she was elected on the effort of the Altona branch in the safest Labor ward in the City of Hobsons Bay.
Luba’s never forged any presence on council except for negative press on the beach safety issue and in deserting her fellow Labor councillors to run along side two conservative independent councillors.
On local assessment, Luba would be lucky to get 20 votes out of her branch (the SL members in a secret ballot will support Jill) and if that’s the case, it would be interesting to see if the NUW continued to support her as the SL and LU would combine to crush her bid on central panel.
The NUW wouldn’t want to put their name to another failed nomination! Luba isn’t worth that much even to the likes of Feeney and the stackers and wackers (NUW)!!

Luba voted correctly on the Police issue, is a hard working local member and is well liked throughout the community. She was worked in Private Enterprise and Government employment and has excelled at both. She has also recently won the ‘Business Icon’ award.

Luba has lived with her boyfriend in her city apartment for some time now (we understand that it is in his name).
It is well known around the traps that she hasn’t lived in the municipality in which she is an elected councillor for some time. An informal investigation is being done at present by people who know that she is lying and if evidence is produced, she is in violation of the Local Government Act and the City should remove her and declare her seat vacant.
A person who abuses the law in such a way should NOT be endorsed for higher office. Even if she is endorsed, the press will find out that she has lied as to her residential status. It should make a great head line.
Altona ALP Insider, it doesn’t matter if Luba is preselected or not, her residential status needs to be found out and action taken. Action will be taken.

Marty is right most MPs do live outside their electoral boundaries as apparently nobody wants to live in the northern or western suburbs where all the safe ALP seats are (well not unless they are maybe in the inner city seats being slowly yuppified and thus vulnerable to Greens challenges). It does show a contempt for the electorate though when you claim to be in touch with the people and yet you think it is beneath you to live in the hood. I reckon one can be generous and cut them some slack if they represent an area and live in an adjoining suburb or the neighbouring more affluent suburb a few kilometres away. I think you are stretching the friendship when you represent struggle street and live in East Melbourne, Middle Park, Kew or Brighton and visit the electorate office once every couple of months using the GPS.
A mute point these days as candidates are increasingly parachuted in.
If Jill Hennessey lives in West Footscray as reported, this is still West so seems fine in terms of representing Altona. A local councillor living outside the electorate seems more problematic though given the grassroot nature of local government.

Spoke to Mark Rose (lib candidate) at the Ausday celebrations yesterday in Pier St, seems like a nice bloke. Before I met him I listened in on a few of his conversations and noted that ‘being a local’ was emphasised in his spiel.
Luba supporters take note apparently she doesn’t need any more votes it’s in the bag(the words of her no 1 supporter Truth be Known) and you dont need to bother heading to the local school to cast your vote

The Local Government Act requires councillors to reside in the municipality in which they stand as a candidate or are an elected representative. Different to the Commonwealth and State Electoral Acts where MP’S can live anywhere.
My inside information has proven correct, over 20 local votes went to Jill Hennessy and Luba was smashed on the POSC.
