UNWISE: Hulls attacks mandatory sentencing

Victorian Attorney-General Rob Hulls apparently launched a jihad attack today against mandatory sentencing at a large gathering of legal eagles. Went over a treat with the lefty lawyers and judges present but certainly boxes in the government to a position they might later have reason to regret if Ted Baillieu attempts to replicate a clever Western Australian Liberal strategy.

When the WA Liberals proposed mandatory jail sentences for those convicted of assaulting police, paramedics, prison guards and public transport guards, Labor didn’t have much of a reaction.

The reaction of the Labor Opposition in WA now after they lost an election badly? They supported it in principle although wanted the measure be extended to teachers, nurses and firefighters.

Will Victorian Labor have to lose an election before it will get wise on these issues?

  1. The problem with the legal system
is that Judges and Magistrates were
    formally defence Barristers. They
    therefore hand out lenient sentences.
The Government should also ammend legislation to give life sentences to the people convicted of murder and drug trafficing

  2. That’s the problem with people who have never studied Law: they cannot accept natural justice isn’t just about dishing out a prison cell whenever possible.

Your idea would deny those who assist people who die with dignity an opportunity to be heard. Or those who accidentally kill? Stupid, unreasoned laws are not only impractical. They instead produce a race to the bottom and produce poor criminal justice.

  4. Laugh. It’s nice to know I’m debating an opponent who’s skilled in cliche ridden generality. If you could string a coherent message together i’d bother responding with informed and more meaningful dialogue.

  5. You are stupid to think ‘lefty lawyers’ are the only ones to care about the issue. Mandatory sentencing is undemocratic. Since when did the separation of powers become optional in this country? Neither Labour nor liberal should be touching it with a bargepole. You should be ashamed for suggesting that they should – just to win an election. Why not just become a dictatorship?

  6. I cant believe Hulls is that stupid. He already has mandatory sentences in Victoria so whats he saying.Get booked for speeding or exceeding the limit BANG GONE. Mandatory Setence.
He has bent over backwards to please the Law Institute and his lovechild Julian Burnside with that pisspoor one sided bill of rights not to mention his stacking of the benches with second class Lawyers and failed party hacks. People have tired of his arrogance and legislated bias towards civil libertarians not to mention the protection he has awarded pedophiles and hardened criminals.Change is coming!
