I have voted Labor for many, many years but will not be voting Labor on Saturday. I am sick of being regarded as a mindless, illiterate sheep in this “Safe Labor Seat of workers” who gets whatever crumbs and representation the government feels like dishing out to us. I want our electorate to become marginal! The people of Point Cook fell for her tricks last time, but not this time!

The Altona electorate is no longer the immigrant, working class demographic of the past who was just happy to be here. Their children have grown up and become assets to this country and are also educated, free thinking voters who want their own representation. All deserve the same rights and level of services as the poeple who live in the East, not just the Labor “safe” numbers attitude so bring on the byelection and let’s hope the peoples voice will be heard.

How many Labor MPs live in their electorates? About as many who send their kids to state schools? I would like to see a list of both. Probably would be a short list!

I find all the arguments about Public Transport very interesting. Caste your tiny minds back to Kennett and remember how bad the trains in the west were. Zillions better than it was; you sheep are led by the Hun & the other rag in their hatred for progress. Altona has never had it this good; Libs would take you back to the stone age again.

I have known Liz Mumby for many years and if you say she is a liberal stooge you are most definitely wrong. So what is she does give her preferences to liberals why does that make her a liberal stooge. She has to give them to someone and why with the intrests of her district at heart would she preference labor who have neglected the West for so long.

The Libs will have a very good chance to give the ALP a grubbing on Saturday in Altona and win the State election in Victoria later this year.

As long as they keep their nose clean and let Mr Brumby bury himself through things like his support of incompetent and bumbling Ministers like Madden and Cameron and the now ‘sadly’ departed Ms Kosky.

Deputy Premier Hulls is certainly no Mr ‘pretty boy’ Thwaites. He doesn’t smile at anything and has panache to appoint lefties to the judiciary, upsetting many in our community!

Mr Brumby has never won an election in his own right and certainly is no Mr ‘nice guy’ Bracks. So there is hope for a close race this year just on the likability scale!

There is one sleeping problem in the South-Eastern suburbs that may come up and bite the Liberal Party on the bum though. Lorraine Wreford the newly appointed Mayor of the City of Casey has put her hand up to be pre-selected for the State seat of Mordialloc, many miles out of her electorate (she lives in Berwick).

There has already been agitation with the locals as to why Ms Wreford is deserting the City of Casey only 5 minutes after being appointed their Mayor and heading off to the City of Kingston (where Mordialloc is) in her desperate ambition to be pre-selected. Even on Australia Day Mayor Wreford was at the City of Kingston breakfast instead of attending her Mayoral duties in the City of Casey!

I understand from reliable sources Ms Wreford was also trying late last year for the Gembrook State pre-selection (within the City of Casey) but had no local Liberal support what-so-ever, so didn’t even enter the race.

An ex-Liberal Member of Parliament with the initials of Geoff Leigh has now taken Ms Wreford under ‘his wing’ and is pushing her barrow in Mordialloc. Apparently she is not the sharpest tool in the shed (a bit like Mr Leigh). Ms Wreford is also very proud of her generous ‘body modifications’ driving some of the older gents in the Liberal Party to distraction. I guess Geoff likes a bit of mature eye candy and his current ‘consultancy work’ which entails working with some of his Labor mates to help ram property developments through local governments has made his interest in Ms Wreford understandable.

But the questions that the Liberal Party needs to bear in mind are:-

Q1 Why has Ms Wreford been given the Mayoralship of Casey in a Labor dominated council in a year where there is to be a Federal and State election? Labor dominated councils are desperate to have Labor Mayors in election years, ensuring they can ‘control’ information and community invites to the local Liberal Members of Parliament and Liberal candidates. Ms Wreford has tried previously to be the Mayor of Casey without success. Why has the local Labor Party endorsed her appointment this year when there will be several tightly contested Federal and State seats in the area?

A1 Perhaps the pending Supreme Court case regarding the highly publicised Cranbourne Brookland Greens housing estate gas leak where more than 560 residents have launched a class action lawsuit through Slater & Gordon against the City of Casey could be the key? This will be a highly publicised event in 2010 (as it was when this terrible thing happened with people having to leave their homes for fear of explosion in 2008). If the City of Casey wins this case they will have fought against their own citizens, and won. They (read Liberal Mayor Wreford) will be ridiculed in the press up hill and down dale. On the other hand if the City of Casey loses the case they will have imposed a bill of millions upon millions of dollars on the ratepayers of Casey for many years. Rates will go through the roof. They (read Liberal Mayor Wreford) will be ridiculed in the press up hill and down dale. We can see the headlines now.
There is only lose-lose in this issue with the Liberal brand burnt under the auspices of Liberal Mayor Wreford being in charge. She will take all the political thumping on this sensitive community issue. If this is so obvious to us why is it not obvious to Ms Wreford?

Q2 Why has Ms Wreford never attended a La Trobe or Gembrook Electorate Conference meeting until the 2009 Gembrook AGM? Why has she never won an executive position in her Berwick Branch when the election needs to go to an internal ballot?

A2 Ms Wreford has no interest in helping the Liberal Party in any way other than having them get her a job in Parliament. Local Berwick Liberals understand Ms Wreford very well and would not support her in any internal contested position. In the 2009 election for State Council Delegates, through the Gembrook AGM, 4 positions were available with 5 members applying to be Delegates. In the ballot Ms Wreford finished last behind two 80 year old ladies!

Q3 In the 2008 local government elections why did Ms Wreford exchange preferences with Labor endorsed candidates? The Liberal candidate Chris Andrews just missed out on the seat to the slippery ALP man Sam Azis due to this despicable act!

A3 It is obvious that Ms Wreford has only one goal. To get Ms Wreford whatever she wants and bugger the Liberal Party.

Q4 Why did Ms Wreford in 2006 bag the Liberal candidate for Cranbourne – Luke Martin in the local press?

A4 In 2006 Ms Wreford ran unsuccessfully for both the South East Metro Upper House (against Inga Peulich and Gordon Rich Phillips) and the lower house seat of Cranbourne, stating to many that she needed some income because of her financial troubles. The fact she did not get any local support for both these seats caused her to spit venom back at the Liberal people who were successful.

Q5 Ms Wreford always talks about being a ‘single mother’ of 4 children. This is true. But she forgets to let people know that her children do not live with her but their father.

A5 This speaks volumes of Ms Wreford desperation to have image over substance.

Q6 Why is Ms Wreford trying for pre-selection in the State seat of Mordialloc, many miles from where she lives?

A6 Apart from Mr Leigh’s pre-occupation with Mr Leigh’s own interests (btw – never trust anyone who speaks out of the corner of their mouth) the chances of Delegates at the Mordialloc pre-selection (miles away from Berwick) not understanding Ms Wreford’s Raison d’être (that’s French for “reason for being” Geoff) is to her advantage.

All in all the Liberal Party needs to be very careful about Ms Wreford’s ability to understand the ‘political tea leaves’ and certainly her real intentions and abilities to be a member of the Liberal Parliamentary party needs to be questioned. The political explosive nature of her being set up to take the heat on the pending Supreme Court case regarding the Cranbourne gas leak while running off to seek endorsement in a seat miles from her own backyard will surely tarnish the Liberal brand in what will be a very important year for the Party.

Lets hope the Liberals don’t repeat another ‘Robert Dean’ type mistake this year. The stakes are too high. In fact Dr Dean pretended he lived up in Berwick when nominating for Gembrook in 2002 didn’t he? I wonder where he was staying when in Berwick?

Come on Lori. If you know Liz Mumby you know she and her family are dyed in the wool Libs, even her husband says so.
The libs ruled for 7 years and tried to put a toxic dump in the west not far from Altona, they cut back on train services and moved coppers to the eastern suburbs from the west to look after their own. So get a timetable from 1999 and check it with todays and you will see more express trains and more services.

Libs will only manage a 4-5% swing…don’t forget this is not the sand belt on the other side of town…and there is an excellent Labor candidate…

It would be good if voters remind Brumby that loyalty is a two ways street.

A 5% swing against ALP in a by election will still be shrugged off by the new born to rule mob in alp head office and spring street.

The bone heads will only wake up when they lose a safe seat.

But that is not likely despite the selective release of polling and the scare mongering by Nick Reece et al.

Scarlet Pimpernel: Well done for bringing the shortcomings of Ms Wreford to public light here. Your claims could be exaggerated and spat by another potential candidate but regardless, it is still important the Party follow up and sort it out before giving Wreford the go ahead. If she is preselected her opponents will have a field day using all that! If it is true then she certainly doesn’t deserve the position. This is why if the locals have a quality, local candidate who they vote on that they want, then there should be no question about who gets preselected. Both parties often send in ‘outsiders’ and it is wrong! The local MP should be a known local person who the majority of the locals want to represent them, not someone who has worked the preselection panel over. Local general Electorate majority rules in the actual election yet preselection local majority goes out the window and it becomes who owes who what favours in the panel preselection. Allowing this to happen just makes the preselection individual panel member so much stronger for the next time and weakens even more the grass roots members vote. If Wreford gets preselected and the unselected local candidates choose to give the local papers the nod to publish their grievances and expose Ms Wreford to the local electorate, then Liberal would without a doubt lose that seat. Communities are like family and will stick with their local candidates if you choose to tell them what is going on. If you choose to let them think you are happy for Ms Wreford to be the candidate then she will scrape through.

Dear Dan. Did Liz not preference the Libs at the last election (her preference card shows she did) and did not those preferences ensure that Point Cook has no representation on the Wyndham City Council. The three councillors all live in Hoppers Crossing do they not. Let us check the preferences on Saturday to see where allegiances lay.

Dan. I have lived in the Point Cook area longer then you. In fact it was Kennett’s Urban Land Authority that started the development in the area. The Liberal Government of the day allocated no money to capital or social infrastructure. The free market economy or local government were left to fund all of this. The Bracks/Brumby Labor governments had to pick up the shortfall. You may not like where you live and like Oliver Twist you want more and the people in the whole of Altona deserve more. But they will not get it from the Liberals. Look at your new schools, Palmers rd bridge, the roads development happening. The bus services current and new ones coming shortly to link Point Cook to Altona etc. Give your preferences to the only political party who are doing something.

Unlike all the political party candidates, Liz Mumby is a local and doesn’t have the backing of a party machine behind her. As a candidate in the last council election she made the best preference deal possible to help her win. She obviously was offered the best deal by a Liberal member so she took the deal, but she was not a stooge and stood to win. Why would she preference another candidate if they didn’t want to give her preferences back?

Thank you for your comments, all. we’ve only been here since 13th feb 2001 (wow, nine years this Saturday). As i remember, palmers rd (south) was only funded for 1/2 width after substantial lobbying from the local community, (including yourself, LB). However, if you’ll look at Point Cook Road, the minor improvements have been payed for by developers.

Train station – promised to be delivered in 2008, but now not due for completion until the END of 2013
Dunnings rd,- yes but only at Palmers Rd & Pt Cook rd intersections, and extra money will have to be spent on restitution when they are properly widened.
Central Ave – nothing.
The list goes on.
For soho/sme business – nothing.
Broadband – nothing
Support for existing home owners not having multi unit block built next to them on what were splanned as sngle residence dwellings – nothing
Stopping the curse of poker machines- nothing
the library opens after the population hits 10k.
Sporting ground 2 + 2 just opening that have no permanent change facilities.
The soccer ground stage one in 4 yeras, plus 2 more for final completion, which hasw been talked about for 7 years now.
$186 million behind (as at last may) in community infrastructure spending by Wyndham.
an auditor generals report in december which shows that the local council hasn’t collected all the developer contributions, and shows significant and substantial difficulties in its accounting system to follow through on these.
And to top it off, not a single word by the labour government as to a) how it might step in and force some accountability and/or
b) offer assistance with getting this community infrastructure program back on track.

Now let me ask the question, who is best placed to advocate for things that impact on the everday lives of residents (such as your kid not being able to play netball or football locally), some-one who’s never before crossed over the bridge to this side of town before, or some-one who is directly impacted by the decisions of state & local governments.

As for the people of Wyndham having to wait, that is the very point. Why should they? The state government (who ever they are)rakes in more than $100 millions annually from the construction of almost 4000 Wyndham homes new homes, via developer contributions, taxes, fes & charges, stamp duty, and ultimately the GST on the construction costs.

We are simply asking for a fair shake in the allocation of revenues in actually setting up the necessary services to benefit those living in new areas.

The absence of the PCRA for the past four years is pretty telling. It shows about as much commitment as Mark Rose.

The 2pp swing against the ALP in Kororoit was 4% not 17%. The ALP 2pp dropped from 75.5% to 71.5%. Get your facts straight.

That’s interesting. Looks like the swing against the ALP in Kororoit was the average swing in a by-election – 4%. I suspect there will be a bigger swing against the ALP in Altona than there was in Kororoit.

We all why GL is hanging around Wreford, think back to his colourful exit from the Malvern Branch years ago!!!

Labor had a chance to have a Mayor in Casey. But the shocking bully boy Kevin Bradford said he would vote for Wreford (although he hates her) and not the two labor frontrunners because the two labor councillors refused to have the ratepayers refund him $8000 in legal fees for the bullying case against him which caused a Community Services Director to resign in depression, and was investigated by WorkCover. This is how Labor operates in Casey, it is all about personal vandettas and what Kevin Bradford can get. Even the local journalists knew about this one!

Bradford is such an expert at making enemies. He had Geoff Ablett the former Mayor under his wing for about five minutes. But it didn’t take Ablett long to work out Bradford for the total scumbag that he is. Ablett was so disgusted by Bradford’s behaviour and what he represents that he abandoned the Labor Party altogether and is about to become the Liberal endorsed candidate for the seat of Cranbourne.
