SURRENDER MONKEY: Hutchinson’s communist propaganda skills honed for Vietnam’s murderous regime now used to spin his demise

hutchadios Here’s a full transcript of Nine’s report on draft dodger and enemy propagandist Garrie Hutchinson’s resignation where despite an apparent prohibition on public servant’s speaking with the media, he seemed to have a pretty good go at it.

hutch3NEWSREADER PETER HITCHENER: A so-called draft dodger has stood aside from his position at the state government’s veterans unit after the RSL questioned his fitness for the job. Historian Garrie Hutchison says he’s the victim of a witch-hunt and makes no apology for opposing the Vietnam War.

Joining us for more on this breaking story, Nick Johnston…

NICK JOHNSTON: Yes Peter I can reveal tonight that Garrie Hutchinson, a key adviser in the government’s veterans’ affairs unit, has decided today to step down from his position after pressure from the RSL. (VEXNEWS understands he was pushed by senior people within his department)

It’s been alleged this week that Mr Hutchinson was a draft dodger who campaigned quite actively against the Vietnam War nearly forty years ago, something he openly admits to and in fact something he says he’s extremely proud of but because of the controversy he’s now decided reluctantly to move aside from that position and to take up a new role elsewhere at the Department of Planning and Community Development. (VEXNEWS also accused Hutchinson of exhibiting propaganda films for Australia’s then enemy, the communist Vietnamese government which went on to murder well in excess of a million people)

As a public servant, Garrie Hutchinson is not allowed to speak to the media  but I have managed to obtain a statement attributed to him in which he has strongly defended himself and says he’s been a victim of “prejudice and a witch-hunt.” (VEXNEWS: Clearly he continues to have little regard for his employer, how did this statement emerge we wonder?)

hutchison1He goes on to say in this statement that

“Life is a journey but I am not one of those who repudiate their beliefs in the face of a grubby tabloid campaign that has demeaned those people and institutions involved in it.”

So some very strong words from Garrie Hutchinson. (VEXNEWS: Not really. It’s rather demeaning to still be trying to defend exhibiting enemy communist propaganda while young Australians were being killed in battle by the very regime you’re promoting)

Not only is Mr Hutchinson a renowned author and war historian, he was also a former speech-writer to former Prime Minister Bob Hawke, and was also instrumental in the decision to exhume the lost diggers from Fromelle (in France) and bury them with full military honours. (VEXNEWS: A government decision actually campaigned for many years by the descendants of those who lost their lives there)

As I said, he’s taken the step very reluctantly but hopes that this will kill off the controversy about his role. (VEXNEWS: Indeed, it reflects very well on the government they were so keen to move him on.)

  1. Garrie Hutchinson was part of a propaganda machine that I believe endangered Australian servicemen in Vietnam and damned them on their return.

Hutchinson and others tried to plant doubts in the minds of our soldiers about the validity of their missions.

Soliders are trained to react to orders without questions because hesitation hands the initiative to the enemy. Protesters such as Hutchinson did their best to undo that training.

News coverage of Hutchinson and others boosted the spirit of the enemy. The atmosphere created ensured that returning Australians were greeted as pariahs.

I served with the ‘Tunnel Rats’ a unit that suffered a 33% casualty rate during my year of service. It is abhorrent that while brave comrades were dying, Hutchinson was barracking for our enemy.

To cap if off, he had a nice little earner that owed its existence to the bravery and sacrifice of my comrades.

  2. Garrie Hutchinson will never change his arrogant ways it seems. He however has bludged on the blood of those killed in Vietnam for the last time.

Hutchinson needs to understand that we had no disagreement with anybody opposing the Vietnam War. We had a disagreement with the way Hutchinson and some of his ilk did so.

He can yell and scream and blame and obfuscate all he likes but he has been outed for what he was and is, a traitor who encouraged Australia’s enemies to kill and wound our mates.

I openly and publicly opposed the involvement of Australia in Iraq, and I still oppose the Iraq War.

However I didn’t offer support and didn’t publish propaganda for our enemy in Iraq who were hell bent on killing and wounding young Australians if they got the opportunity. The same can’t be said for the Australian Wheat Board, which paid money into Saddam’s slush fund which he used to buy weapons to use against Australians.

A quisling and traitor is a quisling and traitor, no matter which War we are talking about.

Just because the Vietnam War was so divisive and opened up so much emotion does not mean that people like Hutchinson could betray the Nation and support our enemies of the time. The type of War in Vietnam was different to WW1 and WW2. However on all occasions we were at war and we had enemies. After WW2 those who aided and abetted the enemy were tried at Nuremberg and in other Courts. Some were executed for treason.

There is no difference between the quislings like Lord Haw Haw of WW2 and Hutchinson.

  3. It seems that the Ossie Ostriches at Channel 9 News “believe” they “broke” the Garrie Hutchinson story last night.

The word on 22 Bendigo Street, Richmond, GTV 9 Melbourne, telephone: 03 9429 0201,
    news tips: 03 9429 3636

is that the stories that ran in the OC Andrew Landeryou blog and the http://www.theaussiedigger.com do not count as news but as a whispering or smear campaigns…

They must have all their heads in the sands at Channel 9 news…

Where was “brave” Channel 9 last week when the story broke?

Is Channel 9 forgetting that “low-budget” Channel 10 News ran it few days nights ago…and beat them to the punch…

  5. Keith said:

“[Hutchinson is] a traitor who encouraged Australia’s enemies to kill and wound our mates.”

Evidence please? I’ve seen none published so far on this site.

Hutchinson self-describes as a draft-resister, not a draft dodger. There is a difference.

    Jim Marett says:

“Garrie Hutchinson was part of a propaganda machine that I believe endangered Australian servicemen in Vietnam and damned them on their return.

“Hutchinson and others tried to plant doubts in the minds of our soldiers about the validity of their missions.

“Soliders are trained to react to orders without questions because hesitation hands the initiative to the enemy. Protesters such as Hutchinson did their best to undo that training.”

All of this is yet to be established as true.

The object of war protest is first of all the Government, to get it to change its policies, secondly the citizenry (including soldiers), to persuade them to also oppose the war.

    Keith also says:

“We had no disagreement with anybody opposing the Vietnam War.”

That is a correct attitude but I am frankly sceptical that it is true. What little I know of the case presents Hutchinson as a legitimate war resister and draft resister and the hostility seems to be coming from Vets who still can’t see the war was wrong and that protest was legitimate and necessary.

I don’t necessarily assume that Hutchinson’s protest activities were correct and flawless in every respect but you are far from making the case that he is a quisling or traitor.

Some Vets are very anxious to ensure their service and sacrifice is recognised. Fair enough. But I am also anxious to ensure that the efforts of war resisters are also recognised.

Who is the bigger hero, or the real hero? The drafted serviceman who goes to the front and endures the trauma of war? Or the draft resister who fought to expose the war and bring it to an end?

That is something to consider. Perhaps both are ‘heroes’, though I rather dislike the overused term ‘war hero’.

It is the Government that is your enemy, with its lies and crimes of war, not your citizen activists, (nor your citizen soldiers).

I see a hostile and nasty campaign to get a young activist for ‘treason’, while the real villains of the piece – Menzies or Gorton (or Howard or Nelson) get away scot free.
