THE FULL COLSTON: Libs go hunting Peter Slipper with claims of rorts and staffer gay sex tape

petterslipper Liberal sources tell VEXNEWS “we’ve only just begun” in their war against Peter Slipper, the Queensland federal MP who agreed to become Deputy Speaker in a deal with Labor.

Their approach is reminiscent of Labor’s brutal campaign against former Labor rat Senator Mal Colston who voted with the Liberals in the Senate in return for election to the Deputy Presidency. Led by Senator Robert Ray at the time, Colston was confronted by barrage of forensically researched material by the Senator detailing various acts of wrongdoing relating to entitlements. He left the parliament in disgrace and only narrowly avoided criminal prosecution on grounds of ill-health. Liberals say that Slipper is going to “get that and more, the ‘full Colston,'” one staffer described it today. “The objective is to force him out of Parliament early, he is unfit for office,” he explained.

They say they have a “mountain of material” on Slipper including:

■ A rumoured sex tape taken by one of his staffers with whom Slipper has maintained – according to the Courier Mail-  “an inappropriate relationship.” VEXNEWS has learned that Slipper has had an on-again-off-again tumultuous friendship with the male staffer in question who Liberals say has been fired and hired on a number of occasions as an electorate officer depending on the state of the relationship;

■  A long history of parliamentary entitlement claims of a dubious nature, of which the $14,000 referred to in today’s Courier-Mail that had to repaid “just scratches the surface”; and

■  Claims by party locals of irregularities with party funds, previously reported in VEXNEWS.

Former Liberal Whip Alex Somlyay is well-known as the principal Slipper-hunter but has been joined by new Whip and fellow Queenslander Warren Entsch who is understood by Liberal colleagues to harbour a deep and abiding hatred for Slipper.

Entsch is well-known as being a gay-friendly MP but is thought to be gravely disappointed at what he sees as hypocrisy given Slipper’s role as a deacon in an ultra-conservative break-away group from the Anglican church in his local area.

One Liberal pointed out that John Howard, Tony Abbott and the Prime Minister herself would all have been aware of the rorts allegations prior to preselections and the surprise election of Slipper to the Deputy Speakership. “He is now the government’s problem,” one Liberal told VEXNEWS this morning.

Shortly after Slipper’s election to the Deputy Speakership with Labor’s support, Abbott warned off members of the Coalition from going after Slipper. They appear to be ignoring his direction.

12PM UPDATE: Friends of Peter Slipper from both sides of the chamber have come out swinging this morning after the Courier Mail and VEXNEWS published claims of an “inappropriate relationship.” One told VEXNEWS that Slipper is a “highly-principled patriot who supports the good causes VEXNEWS supports” and that “Peter is as heterosexual as they come and is in a happy and loving marriage, these claims are not correct.” Another said this is a “vindictive and bloody-minded attack that is part of a systematic campaign against Slipper by internal enemies who want Mal Brough to takeover his seat. That’s all this is about, eating your own is the cheapest, easiest and nastiest form of politics and you ought not be encouraging them.”

  2. Come to my office, Slippery Slipper, we have much to discuss.

  3. Why stop at just the “slipper”? Why not take aim at other Hawke like characters?

  4. Anyone who behaves as Peter Slipper is believed to, has to go from our parliament. It is essentuial to the good name of our Parliament and our country that ALL MP’s have to have and maintain a really good name and character.

  5. I have been reporting in the Sunshine Coast Daily (www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au) about Mr Slipper’s use of parliamentary entitlements since the public release in late June of MP claims for the half year to December, 2009.
Mr Slipper has been given several opportunities to fully explain how he incurred nearly $12,000 in taxi and Com car charges during one 30-day period from mid-July last year but he has consistently refused the opportunity.
The issue is one of probity, other matters simply muddy those waters.
The Member for Fisher is the subject of a current Department of Finance investigation into his entitlement claims.
It is to be hoped for the sake of the public’s confidence in the parliament and its processes that the investigation reveals where Mr Slipper went in those taxis, who he saw, what they discussed and how that materially benefited either the parliament or his electorate.
Yes there is electorate anger among Liberals about the MP’s acceptance of the deputy speaker’s role.
But it would be a wasted opportunity to improve accountability if the full audit of Mr Slipper’s expense claims by the Department of Finance in line with recommendations contained in the Australian National Audit Office Report No. 3 was sidetracked or dismissed as being the consequence of little more than internal party politics.

  8. Ah yes! Now a sex tape.
Never mind that shock jock Alan Jones is a paid up member of the Liberal party & great friend to Howard, Abbott & Co. & was caught soliciting for gay sex in public toilets in the UK.

  9. He’s been in fights outside nightclubs, consistently rorted entitlements with taxpayer-funded phone bills second only to the Prime Minister. Not to mention he’s got an alcohol problem that makes him unfit for public offices.

It’s embarrassing beyond any reason, and if he doesn’t lose preselection he’ll lose his seat at the next election. I’m one of his constituents and we are all fed up with this sort of crap.

  10. Mr Slipper – who will earn an extra $30,000 a year in his new role – spent $835 of public funds in just six months on magazines including Australian Aquarium Keeper, fashion bible Harper’s Bazaar, Organic Gardener, Gourmet Traveller and Wellbeing.

From what he reads I think we can confirm the nature of the relationship with the staffer :)

  13. Well if being an alcoholic is a reason to be removed from parliament why not get rid of all the ugly buggers- because between just those two we’d be left with sweet F.A.!

  16. I am sure that there are many in the Liberal back bench that are subject to inducement or forced to resign under threat of past indiscretions being outed. Any By Election may very much favour the ALP.

After all is this not what the house of cards and to play the king all about.

A great drama that should be replayed on the ABC along with Brave new world

  17. and yet they endorsed him for parliament a few months ago – what does this say for the state of the coalition?

  18. Who could forget that Slipper’s wife Lyn took out a full page ad in the Australian in March 2003 declaring her opposition to Australia being involved in the Iraq war. She also didn’t mind telling anyone who cared to listen in the leafy Canberra suburb of Red Hill that her husband had shacked up with his staffer, and that the staffer was not a female.
No doubt Slipper’s close friend Sophie Mirabella will be defending his good name.

  20. I take exception to Anon’s claim that reading Organic Gardener implies one’s sexual preference!

I wonder if your anti-Slipper filth merchandise would have been run if he’d stayed in the tent and not been Deputy Speaker? Hey VEX, want to write about the lovely Julie Bishop and her friendships?
