THE JOKER IS HE: Greensparty clowncillor Trent McCarthy does dirty deal with Liberal then fails to lodge preferences on time

TrentmccarthyAn ambitious local Greensparty politician in the northern suburbs of Melbourne tried to do a sleazy preference swap with a notional political rival in the Liberal party. Hilarity ensued when the politician – an occasional stand-up comedian – failed to lodge the preferences on time, leading him to threaten and bully electoral officials who didn’t see the joke.

The Darebin Greensparty, led by self-styled and perhaps partly unintentional comedian Trent McCarthy has been rocked by a twin scandal where he attempted a last-minute preference swap with a Liberal party member which went horribly wrong when he failed to lodge his indication of preferences with the Victorian Electoral Commission on time at the cut-off date last Friday.

GREENSPARTY DEAL WITH NAIVE LIBERAL COMES UNSTUCK
McCarthy had struck a sneaky last-minute deal with a young Liberal party member – and apparent David Southwick staffer or volunteer – Oliver “Ollie” Walsh and believed the VEC was obliged to accept his indication of preferences – mailed out to voters as part of the information pack – provided he was in the council building prior to the midday cut-off. Sadly for him and his comrades, McCarthy was mistaken.

The councillor’s reaction to the disappointment was said to be thermonuclear, with much theatrical arm-waving, tears welling in eyes, bullying antics and such, as it meant that not only were preferences not lodged for Greensparty candidates but for all of their “dummy” candidates too. And not just in McCarthy’s ward either, no Greensparty candidates (or their designated feeder candidates) have preferences indicated in any Darebin ward as a result of McCarthy’s error of judgment and bungling.

The Greensparty councillor reportedly threatened VEC officials and council officers with litigation and “pay-back” if they didn’t accept the indication of preferences. They were not for turning.

(Trent McCarthy’s) reaction to the disappointment was said to be thermonuclear

Check out the carnage here, on the VEC’s own website.

The incompetence debacle will cost the big-spending Darebin Greensparty plenty, locals say, potentially dashing hopes the Greensparty held to elect more than one councillor in some wards. Questions have already been asked locally about the extent of lavish spending on real-estate agent style signs that have sprung up around the Darebin municipality, believed to cost many thousands of dollars.

BOSS BARBER HAS A GUTFUL
The incident has been a profound embarrassment, that many believe will undermine his claim to replace Greg Barber MLC MBA in the northern metropolitan upper house seat, which he apparently covets. Barber once nurtured the councillor but is believed to be very unimpressed with him recently.

There was once talk of “term-limits” in the Greensparty on their Victorian MPs, there’s not so much talk of that now.

McCarthy’s deal with the Liberal party member, Mr Walsh, has caused great concern among the left-leaning membership of the Greensparty in Darebin who believe McCarthy has got “lost” in the “numbers-game” on the council and has “lost perspective” according to one McCarthy critic who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of the consequences of publicly speaking out against the increasingly cynical and jaded local politician with a well-established reputation for seeking revenge on critics and dissidents.

McCarthy’s one-time mentor Greg Barber, elected the Greensparty state leader by reluctant female colleagues a couple of years after he was informally designated as de facto leader by his loving fans at VEXNEWS, who regard him as a Labor Right hard-headed numbers-man trapped in a Greensparty vegan existence is thought likely to stay on in the upper house indefinitely in light of McCarthy’s loss of support. (Barber, a graduate of Melbourne Business School, is not actually a vegan, and is known for ostentatiously enjoying his roast meats in the Parliament House Members’ dining room, as you do)

LIE DOWN WITH DOGS, GET UP WITH FLEAS
McCarthy has also joined with the dodgiest elements on the Darebin council, most notably the infamously sleazy and frequently investigated former bottle-shop owner Vince Fontana (known by some locals as “Mr Permit” due to his innovative and entrepreneurial approach to town planning), in making claims of wrongdoing against other councillors, word around town is that McCarthy and his comrades are under the microscope over their own conduct that could lead to great instability in the next council, already thought to be struggling with the prospect of meeting its obligations under the “call-up” of funds (in multi-millions) for its defined-benefit superannuation scheme.

VEXNEWS has previously tracked revelations that McCarthy, despite faking it as an inner-urban rebel, to have trousered money from banks and big mining companies he pretends to oppose.

No wonder the councillor needs a good laugh. He will reap what he sows.

Walsh is a good young bloke, Liberal sources say, who has learned his lesson about dealing with the far-left, viciously anti-Israel Greensparty.

  5. The rule about being in the building applies to voting only. All voters in polling station building before 6pm get to vote as the doors are shut at 6pm.

  6. Ollie is the best man the Greens never had! Now his fellow Libs don’t get his preferences. That’s ok, maybe he can take Trent’s spot at Barber’s office, they can trade ideas.

  7. The old Preston Council was one of the most sensible in the State. Unfortunately, when it was amalgamated with the nutters from Northcote to become Darebin it became one of the worst vying for the title of the purest purveyor of idiotic policies with Moreland and Yarra.

  10. The deadline also applies to nominations, which will be processed after 12pm if candidate is in building. Having said that, this returning officer seems to be prety strict.

  12. In the past 4 years, a number of current councilors have exhausted their ideas and expended their energy over long terms. Infighting and personal conflicts dominate council meetings. We now need fresh faces in Town Hall to create a liveable, sustainable and vibrant place where all residents, from all walks of life are able to flourish and achieve their future goals. Our City’s way of doing things must produce local solutions that try to preserve the unique character of OUR Community. Darebin NEEDS local knowledge, energy and fresh ideas. At the last Darebin Council Election in 2008, the Greens complained that the ALP were running “dummy” candidates left, right and center. However, it looks like the tables have turned with the Greens now running a lead candidate in each ward, and “supportive” candidates to help get their lead candidate over the line. Local Government is all about the individual and local concerns; and not about party politics and personal interests. Local Government is about stepping up and representing all residents and ratepayers and being their representative and voice in Town Hall. Elected Councillors need to focus on keeping Council rates affordable, Making Darebin a TRANSPARENT, ACCOUNTABLE and RESPONSIBLE Local Government, Improving access to community, early childhood, youth and aged care services, Providing improved open spaces, parks and local sporting clubs, Improved parking in our suburban streets and train stations, Protecting our area from inappropriate development and Cutting YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT for our children. Since 2001, Darebin is the 5th MOST DISADVANTAGED municipality in Victoria and has the highest youth unemployment rate. LETS GET DAREBIN BACK ON TRACK – OUR COMMUNITY DESERVES BETTER.

  13. Doing a prefence deal with the Libs in Darebin would be worth all of about 20 votes!! Hardly ground breaking.
What about the story of Diana Asmer standing down, Fontana standing down from Planning Committee, CEO under investigation…Darebin is lucky there are even having an election.

  14. Just had a look at the VEC website it seems they did get the prefs in the other two wards in. Still good to see them screw up one though.

  21. We have comedic candidates in the north west ward of Moreland too. SL candidate Zeynep Yeselyurt has spent about $50k on real estate boards but couldn’t get her act together during preference negotiations. Kim il Sure knows how to pick ’em.

  22. The preferences and Candidate Statements are submitted together. Do you expect us to believe Cr McCarthy managed to submit half the form before midday, but the other half afterward? Get real – he didn’t submit preferences because he couldn’t bring himself to put any number beside the incompetent, verbose Tsitas’s name.
