Federal Government

THE SPEW PARADIGM: Independents squirming like pigs on market day

The key independents, Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott, don’t want to give their power away by losing Gillard.

Perfectly rational behaviour.

This ‘ugly but beautiful’ paradigm that is the current Federal Parliament is not serving Australia well but it perfectly suits the independents or country members as those with good memories call them.

Horsetrading is perfectly rational behaviour.

Windsor and Oakeshott, however, picked the wrong side. They just hated the idea of the Nationals back in power. Their political raison d’être is to undermine their former party that failed to fully acknowledge their greatness.

As New South Welshmen, they should have known better. Regicide is a hobby in the Premier state and Gillard’s ascent to power proved the pastime had gone viral. Sussex Street disease has spread across the nation like a bad case of bird flu in some of Chinatown’s eateries. Friday midday, it must be yum cha o’clock.

Windsor has consistently cited Abbott’s opposition to a carbon dioxide tax as the reason for not supporting the Coalition for minority government. He cited supporting Gillard because she was willing to break an explicit promise and stated that Abbott was pig-headed for not yielding, for not breaking his promise to oppose a carbon tax or ETS. His version of honour must be very complicated and rather more urbane than most of his rural constituents could comprehend.

Abbott’s consistency is made out to be obstinacy. Winsdor was the obstinate one.

Only Katter, the demented, charismatic and crafty old fox he is, could see where it was all heading.

Windsor has since stated, contradicting earlier statements, that Abbott was begging him to support the Coalition in minority government. Windsor implies Abbott had demeaned himself by pledging to sell his bottom to achieve his Prime Ministerial goal. Abbott denies it.

Who doubts Abbott threw everything he could at getting the prize? The fact he did not negotiate on a carbon tax or emissions trading scheme demonstrated his capacity his commonsense and Gillard’s massive miscalculation. Opposing carbon tax has proved to be Abbott’s greatest policy decision.

Perfectly rational behaviour.

Today, Rob Oakeshott has shot across the bough of HMAS Warringah in response to Abbott’s gunboat diplomacy: refusing to horse trade his way into the top job, as announced on Jon Faine’s ABC morning radio show.

It was a significant statement, lost on the salivating press gallery vultures.

Abbott has put the dignity of highest office in the land above politics, or at least the kind of vicious politics Rudd has unleashed.

On Fran Kelly’s flagship AM show, Oakeshott expressed his exasperation towards Abbott’s leadership. He claims Abbott has tried to frustrate the Government from Opposition. How dare he!

Expecting Abbott, with those telling cauliflower ears, not to be combative and therefore, keep the Government accountable … what universe does he live on?

Oakeshott went on to explain that Abbott would reconsider his position if Turnbull was leader and that Abbott was a DLP acolyte, readying itself to print money.

First, Oakeshott and Windsor are bluffing. They are non-caucus members of the Gillard Labor executive. It’s just mischievous nonsense.

Second, Abbott does have a social democratic streak about his conservatism, although he is a long way away from the kind of protectionism that Santamaria, or, even Black Jack McEwen, the greatest leader of the Nationals, once championed. Neither great leaders promoted printing money.
(Didn’t Oakeshott and Windsor belong to the Nationals once?)

Third, the only leader in the Western world today printing money – quantitative easing – is Barack Obama, America’s most progressive President since FDR, in order to keep US manufacturing competitive during these globally unstable times. If Barry O prints money, is that okay by Oakeshott’s undergraduate standards?

Abbott’s Liberals won’t be doing that.

At Parliament House, Oakeshott’s office is just near Malcolm Turnbull’s. Turnbull knows how impressionable Oakeshott is. Oakeshott is echoing lines from Turnbull’s going-nowhere whispering campaign.

One can only conclude Oakeshott is as politically literate as he looks.

This Parliament is a poisoned chalice, spike with Kevenge venom.

Oakeshott and Windsor are playing a short and unglorious game … perfectly rational behaviour … but not as honourable, as they would like the world to think.

Abbott is playing a longer game, for at least a three-term government.

Perfectly rational behaviour.

The independents are intimately entwined into their own political death roll along with thirty odd Labor members. Odd in several respects.

Rudd is a mean and lean saltwater crocodile, twisting and tearing the limbs and flesh off the Labor’s corpse.

Yet Labor will remains in power, even if Rudd – as unlikely as it is – were to win on Monday or at some later date … because Abbott doesn’t want the support of the independents.

Abbott wants their seats and a bloody big majority. Abbott possibly wants a double dissolution in the first six months of his prime ministership, if the Senate blocks key reforms.

So much for the independents’ beloved carbon tax!

Oakeshott and Windsor have been petty, disingenuous and spiteful for no lasting benefit to their constituents or the country.

These country members who have falsely traded as independents deserve Kevin Rudd.

Their constituents are waiting with scowls, baseball bats and pitchforks.

The day of reckoning is nigh.

LOL. You’re hotter than Wilcannia asphalt, Andrew. Even if most of it is Oscar quality gibberish, there’s some nugggets of gold in the Vex dungheap today.

  2. What you are seeing from Oakeshott is a carefully orchestrated campaign to distance himself from Labor. The comment about Turnbull is part of that. He is casting the impression that he is really a conservative but not with Abbott. It makes him look silly to the wider populace but to Lyne voters he appears to regain his “independance”. He is trying to distance himself from the fact he put Labor in.
As well he is criticising local State Govt decisions that are unpopular trying to get the high morale ground. For the first time in his political career he has had to hang his hat on something and he has been found wanting.

  4. Vexnews is right – Abbott does not want the independents’ support – he wants their seats. He will get their seats and a whole bunch of seats of the ALP backbench in marginal seats (under 3%) who appear to be backing Gillard 10 to Rudd’s 2 if Graham Richardson is to be believed.

  7. Speaking of squirming pigs. Remember a few weeks ago an animal slaughter factory in NSW was close due to animal cruelty. The AJN has reported that this NSW animal
factory was the only place in NSW that provided kosher (and I assume halal) meat in NSW. Now kosher meat has to come from Victoria the AJN said. However this highlights the vile practice of killing animals whilst they are alive by primitive religions believers.

  8. Like Vexn ews the short cons are taking the long view on this…

keep Gillard in place for big loss in 2014…Bill takes the leadership after the election and replace the 10 or 15 marginals who lose their seats with their factional mates…too easy…the magic touch in all this is that they have charmed 10 marginals to sign on for this Titanic ride…

For the first time since you began commenting all those years ago I have to pull you up on your comment.
Your comment, ‘Abbott will get their seats and a whole bunch of seats of the ALP backbench in marginal seats (under 3%)’.
Giuseppe you should know better given your previous sensible comments over the years.
Try Abbott ‘will get everything with a 12% margin and under from Labor’ and your comment would be informed and closer to the mark for the next election.

    Posted by Chris Agnew | February 26, 2012, 19:09
  52. Regardless of the outcome, this is how it should be.

The Australian people voted for independents and minor parties.

I do not like this situation but I accept that they did vote this way which brought about a minority government.

Australians should ge over the fact that we cannot always live in majority government good ( or bad) times forever and a day.

There is therefore nothing wrong with giving Windsor Oakeshott a Ministry.

Majority government is not a sacred cow nor a dogma, yet so many people talk as though it is.

    Posted by Michael Webb | February 26, 2012, 19:28
  53. The electorate always votes in independents in a few seats. This is not the cause of the minority Government. the fact is they were split in their support between the ALP and the LNP . Giving the balance of power to the independents, I see no problem with that.

We are a representative parliamentary democracy. Government is formed by the pay that maintains confidence of the Lower house.

If Rudd is appointed leader of the ALP parliamentary Caucus the Governor General would have seek counsel and possible confirmation of a vote of the Parliament that Kevin can command the support of a majority of the Parliament.

Gillard has the support of the independent cross bench members. Rudd does not.

It is possible that Tony Abbott could secure the Prime Ministership on the condition he will go to an early election.

There is no certainty that Rudd can regain the Prime Ministership. To reinstate Rudd over Gillard would further destabilize government and the nation.

Rudd is not the solution but the problem.

Those who support his nomination are destabilizing the ALP government.

Gillard is the best option. she will win the support of Caucus and hopefully without Rudd undermining the Government she will rightly improve the ALP standing.

Rudd does not have the numbers. the best outcome and message is to re-endorse Julia Gillard As leader.

it needs to also be mentioned that Tony Abbott was elected leader of the LNP by a vote of one.

  54. I keep coming back to the roast pigs head and then it struck me. It reminded me of the book and film “Lord of the Flies” where the smart kid nicknames “piggy” (Rudd) was eventually killed by the school bullies (Gillard’s factional savages) only in turn to be rescues by an adult (Abbott).

However how is its meat kosher of they are killed and chopped up pigs and sheep together perhaps using the same knives. Did you see the video on the TV news?
