WHAT A WICKED WEB THEY FORGE: The Age shamed over use of forged email in smear on MP

The Age’s War on colourful and feisty Victorian Liberal MP Inga Peulich has massively backfired on them today with admissions by them they relied on a forgery in a front-page attack on the high-profile MP on Sunday.

Gutter-snipes Royce Millar – infamous in media circles for illegally recording telephone conversations and cybercriminal hacking of private databases News of the World style – and eyelash-flutterer Melissa Fyfe wrote the erroneous albeit amusing account which suggested, in the grand traditions of local government, that Peulich’s son, promising Paul, had committed both to developers and local greenists diametrically opposed positions on the development of “Green Wedge” land. Even if true, and it’s in The Age, so it’s safe to assume it isn’t, he would certainly not be the first to straddle both sides of the barbed wire fence of local councillor decision-making.

But the part that has landed the Age in hot water is their reliance on what appears to be a forgery for part of their attack on promising Paul’s mum, Inga. They claimed to be in possession of a smoking gun email purportedly from Peulich, that was supposedly proof of her meddling in the local council on behalf of her boy.

And while the whole question about whether local government is to be treated like a court where its decision-makers are to act like judges not elected politicians is a complex one for another time, it is certainly a radical anti-politician re-interpretation of local government to deem it villainous for a state MP to have an active role in municipal affairs. The Age appears to want politics to be illegal, so that “non-political” (yet often extremely left-leaning) council officers can run the show.

Having been caught in the act of relying on a forgery for a front-page splash, what did The Age do? It published a begrudging “clarification” on page two of its august journal today, without a word of apology or contrition.

We have been pretty tough on Inga Peulich in the past, even reporting on the sensitive subject of her publicly-funded electorate office outhouse, and no doubt will find reason to be again, but she does have a go, she is enterprising and tough and feisty and all those things that are in very short supply in elective politics. There’s too much vanilla and not enough fruit and nut flavours in the political ice-cream shop, in our view. And Ms Peulich is certainly not vanilla.

Patriots on both sides of the aisle will hope she sticks it right up The Age for this latest disgraceful episode, in the Press Council and in the courts. She’s got them on toast.

WEDNESDAY 6PM UPDATE: Well-placed Liberal sources tell VEXNEWS that there’s every chance all of the emails referred to by The Age are forgeries and that the ailing newspaper has refused to provide copies of the forgeries when asked by representatives of Ms Peulich. They can run but they can’t hide.

Further, they say that local media tomorrow will report that Ms Peulich plans to sue The Age in defamation over the forgery snafu and is currently consulting lawyers on the matter. Developing…

  5. The Age’s insistence on the highest standards from everyone else while acting like incorrigible rogues who won’t ever apologise even when caught red-handed is a big joke.

My ten-year-old wouldn’t get away with it.

A simple apology, given the same prominence as the original story would be appropriate.

It’s time The Age got off its high horse and started acting with human decency.

    They are scum.

We followed him and we backed him his entire career. The Annual Howard Lecture is a gathering of his life long fans and friends. Why then, uninvited, unexpected and unwelcome did Victorian Liberal Senators Fifield and Ryan and Ms Kelly O’Dwyer Higgins Liberal attend? All worked for Peter Costello who did much to trouble and hurt Mr Howard. Those 3 spread bad tidings about Mr Howard for a long time. Peter Costello would never appear at Mr Howard’s Lecture as he would know no one would want or welcome him. Please can he tell the 3 MP’s not to come again. It left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth and ruined an otherwise joyous occasion.

  8. Did you noten that in the retraction, they said that she “may not have” sent the e-mail. Not that she did not, but may not have. So, after being caught out, they still cannot bring themselves to admit they were wrong! And they wonder why their readership is declining. Their retraction reflects their quality of journalism – half hearted and lame.

  62. The mutual self interest of Vic MPs is beyond doubt with neither opposition nor government wanting to introduce an ICAC system that has take action against many ministers in NSW. The federal government promised independents fair dinkum anti- corruption laws but we are still waiting.

The current anti-corruption framework in Victoria is a system that protects the elite and their mates and dishes out slaps on the wrists with serious matters locked up in confidential processes. The public servants in charge of investigations spend most of their time tip toeing around Lib and Lab power brokers who eventually have the power to appoint or not oppoint them. This circular set up means the most corrupt and most politically useful public servants are protected by our public watch dogs, who know who to look out for. Loyal watchdogs never bite the powerful hands that feed them. To keep up appearances some matters may be referred on – but often to incorrect jurisdictions thus protecting wrong doers. Low level flunkeys get charges the top brass sail on. Look at botched multi million dollar customs cigarrette case.

IBAC may first seem like a step forward from current set up that relies on the serious twisted George Brouwer but IBAC is carefully designed to make investigations into MPs and Ministers impossible.

Like a condom with a hole in it IBAC offers little protection.

  63. To see how the politician’s loyal servants work in Victoria look no further than Bri mbank inquiry – lots of noise, no charges, some low level operators given bans from local government over how to vote cards but main branch stackers still on public payroll with state MPs. All a charade to decieve the public.

  74. We hear that on top of the “clarificatioon, that one key document “could not be authenticated”, The Age’s 2nd document is a falsified one.

Relevant legislation is Crimes Act 1958 – SECT 83A Falsification of documents

    83A. Falsification of documents

    (1) A person must not make a false document with the intention that he or she,
or another person, shall use it to induce another person to accept it as
genuine, and by reason of so accepting it to do or not to do some act to that
other person’s, or to another person’s prejudice.

Penalty: Level 5 imprisonment (10 years maximum).

    (2) A person must not use a document which is, and which he or she knows to

genuine, and by reason of so accepting it to do or not to do some act to that

    Mrs Peulich: Age articles

Mrs PEULICH — I wish to place on the record some remarks in relation to a series of articles written by Royce Millar and published in the Age from 18 January. The articles were predicated on a bogus email — as the Age admitted on page 2 of its 23 January edition — and based on hearsay from persons with political motives and fabricated documents, including one document purportedly written by me to a ‘Brian’ on internal party matters, as I have been advised by a third-party recipient who received the portable document format (PDF) version of the document from Royce Millar on 14 January at 11.16 a.m.

I wish to emphasise to the chamber and to the community that this document is a fabricated document. The Age will therefore be unable to authenticate it. The Age is unwilling to admit this because its elaborate attempts to character assassinate me and my family would become even more apparent.

Other allegations and imputations attributed to parties with political motives are also unsubstantiated and disclose no impropriety. The landowners association issued a media release, an abridged version of which was published in the Age, rejecting any imputations of impropriety which were inferred by Royce Millar and the Age in its publication. I therefore call on the Age to correct, retract and apologise, or it will be seen to be defending biased, inaccurate and unfair reporting.

I also encourage the Leader of the Opposition in the other place to blow the whistle and make sure his personnel get out of the dirt unit.
