WILL THEY JAIL JAKE THE SNAKE? Gay for pay blackmailer will be sentenced Monday, Della-Vedova’s representative rants at VEXNEWS for reptilian reference

jakesnakejudgmentBlackamailer Jake “the Snake” Della-Vedova’s County Court appearance today was a sordid affair, with Prosecutors reading out an appalling tale of greed, crystal meth addiction and general woe involving him selling his sexual services to a man (whose name, occupation and any elective office he may hold or have held in the past have been suppressed by County Court order and will be vigorously enforced here in the comments section) and then blackmailing the man with a covert recording of their illegal encounter.

In a manner highly pleasing to the VEXNEWS editorial board, Jake the Snake’s barrister Mr Trevor Edwin Wraight specifically complained to the court of cruel media coverage “particularly on the internets(sic) where my client was referred to as ‘Jake the Snake.'” Our representative in court beamed with pride.

Many of the scribes in attendance – including the now completely head-shaven Iron Mike Bachelard of The Age (in receivership) who had a large Blackberry in his pocket but didn’t seem that pleased to see me – were barely able to contain their laughter when the defence counsel quoted from the two headed snake present on our story graphic on Sunday.  He quoted the snake saying “Hiss! There’s just no honour among secret gay adulterous lovers these days.” We should have added in ‘rent-boy, ‘predator’ and ‘scumbag’ for good measure.

Jake’s counsel also complained that because of the media interest in his story of shame that he had been forced to delete his Facebook account, cutting off communication channels with friends. Boo hoo.

Judge Hannan seemed to find no trouble with our characterisation of events or of the defendant himself.

Indeed, after the prosecutor had finished detailing Jakey’s sordid crimes, involving repeated SMS threats and demands for money, it made us think we’d probably gone in rather too easily on the crook. The threats made by Jake Della-Vedova of his victim suggested this crime was no playful frolic or a case of a lover scorned.

Jake the Snake had covertly recorded the victim and him in sexual congress for a marathon forty-six minutes. He had then hit up the victim for money in a “gay for pay” prostitution arrangement. The man paid a total of $400 for Della-Vedova for sex.

Della-Vedova went from being exploited poor young rent-boy to a particularly vicious, calculating and nasty predator determined to extract $15,000 from a man he deemed to have wealth and power.

His threats to pay or else he’d go to A Current Affair with the forty-six minute video recording grew ever more menacing and threatening including deadlines for payments and thuggery more in keeping with the mafia than a supposedly hard-working country boy hitting the big smoke. The court heard this ranged from the high-life of Rosati’s, a place frequented by many Liberals and Solomon Lew in the days when doctors permitted him to eat, to the rather less salubrious caf of Ikea in Richmond where it is understood Jake and his older lover supped on those tasty meatballs designed to remind one of Swedish life.

His victim bravely went off to the Police when he realised the young menace was deadly serious in his menacing demands. The Police then busted Jake in a sting that would have done the FBI proud.

Jake Della-Vedova’s life of bludging off his parents and others also came out in court, ironically in an attempt to paint him more sympathetically.

Prior to moving to Melbourne, Jake ran a cafe in his parents’ home town with money provided by the folks and his grandma. He ran it into the ground, seemingly distracted by a lover who lived in Melbourne, where he eventually moved. Worryingly, he also worked as a nanny and supervisor of children on overseas trips.

The court also heard that Jake had significant issues with a claimed crystal meth addiction that he has since beaten and a health issue that the court ordered suppressed. This was offered up by Jake’s wily counsel in a move to get him a lighter sentence.

jakethesnakecrimespreeOFF WITH HIS HEAD
Judge Hannan will pass sentence Monday morning. In order to comply with the court order that has been made suppressing identifying the occupation, current or past elective office or identity of the victim for a period of ten years, we have decided to close the comments section on this story. Please do not make any suggestions about the man’s identity in any other place on the site, we will delete it immediately and ban permanently any IP addresses who do this.

If you’d heard the tawdry nature of what the victim went through, even in the circumstances where he was illegally paying for sex with a guy many years his junior, you’d well understand that the order is in place for good reason.

Jake the Snake may be young but it doesn’t make any less of an evil, greed-motivated predator. There was no evidence that he had committed despicable crimes like this before but it didn’t take much imagination to think that he might have been preying on lonely sad and confused middle-aged blokes who could easily be blackmail victims.

The court also heard that Della-Vedova has other criminal charges pending, for theft of a pair of sunglasses.

Legal experts had told us they didn’t expect Della-Vedova would get a custodial sentence. We hope they’re wrong. The Prosecution suggested penalties up to as much as four years imprisonment which was attacked by Jake Snake’s lawyer as “irresponsible.” The judge then told Mr Wraight that barristers directing such unseemly language at each other was not appropriate.

A young bloke with the world at his feet, both folks who flew down to be with him through the ordeal. His Dad – a vet – told the court they wanted to take him home and help him rehabilitate. All very sad stuff but it didn’t change the fact that Della-Vedova had engaged in a particularly venal and horrible crime for which there should be a tough but fair penalty that will deter others from such predatory behaviour.

But the matter is that the dirty Pollie, not only lied and PAID for sex, but CHEATED on his wife. She of all people has a right to know. And this pollie SHOULD be named and shamed not for seeking the comfort of another man but for deed of CHEATING. With the world awaiting the Mardi Gras next weekend I myself and many people around the world want to wish all my friends who will be in the parade a happy gay and lesbian Mardi Gras. And Jakie did you not learn anything from your years of being friends with us that you have to be nice and respect people. You have been bad and should accept your punishment, and the Pollie well he should be named and shamed not for the gay liasion but for the lying and cheating – shame on you!!!!

  30. Media reports of this incident identify a single “victim” – a “victim of blackmail” – and his name and position, and the politcal party and parliament he serves cannot be named…

There are however many victims to be acknowledged here who have already been named or otherwise identified. It is important to acknowledge them all:

    1. The [deleted] concerned is indeed a victim of blackmail – a crime. He is also a victim of a lifelong fear of discrimination and homophobia, which forced him to hide his gay sex life from the public view, mislead his electorate, enter a sham marriage, and tow the line of his political party, remaining in shameful silence – and supporting party decisions which will not enact equal rights for gay and lesbian citizens as they rightly should.

    2. The foolish and somewhat desperate young man concerned is also a victim. He will suffer a legal penalty and criminal record. He will suffer the stigma and approbrium of being gay, having sex for money, and for balckmail. He has been damaged by the politician in a deeper way… for him this incident turned human intimacy into a commodity to be traded for cash – bought and sold -and which will devastate his self esteem even further.

    3. The wife of the [deleted] is also a victim. She has lived in a sham, now broken marriage, and like many [deleted] spouses worked tirelessly to further her husbands [deleted] career, attending meetings, events, fundraising bearing and raising children virtually alone. She may have known he was gay, or maybe not, but she never expected nor deserves the turmoil and humiliation of this sordid set of circumstances – and such an inauspicious ending to it all.

    4. The children of the [deleted] are victims. Perhaps for a short time when younger, they will be shielded from the sordid details, but they cannot be shielded from a broken fractured home and destroyed relationships. Eventually, they will learn the ugly truth about their father, and struggle to deal with the emotional turmoil of it. They will not understand why the subterfuge and lies were necessary, and as their world changes for the betterment of gay people with their approval – they will look upon their closet gay [deleted] father through eyes of shame.

    5. The parents, family and friends of the foolish and desperate young man are victims. As they retreat to their rural NSW home, they will have to care for and rehabilitate a very troubled son, brother, friend. They will suffer the stigma and approbrium of these events just as he himself will suffer. They will be shunned, ostracised, criticised and condemned. They will wonder what they did wrong – and how they failed him. They will be blamed for things they could not forsee or prevent.

    6. The honest and openly gay and lesbian community are victims. They who refused to lie, and sacrificed much for their integrity, will be tarred with the same brush by the ignorant and the bigotted. Their openly gay presence in society and in politics will be resisted, attacked, vilified, mocked and dissapproved of. Their courage and honesty, their unwillingness to live a lie (like the [deleted] concerned) in the darkness of secrecy, will not be supported and appluaded as it should be, it and their lives will be further condemned. These people will be made victims and scapegoats because of their unwillingness to leave a trail of victims behind them as the closet gay politician has done.

    7. The political party of the [deleted] and the political process iteslf are victims. They have been fatally undermined by the prevailing orthodoxy they both enforce – “Don’t ask – Don’t tell”… This policy has prevented them benefitting from the valuable contributions of many who are openly gay… allowed the active blocking, degradation and disendorsement of these openly gay citizens. The “Don’t ask – Don’t tell” approach they tolerate within their ranks (both sides of the process) has degraded them collectively, delegitimised them and destroys their credibility – it makes the parties and the process hypocritical. It renders overdue policy for the equality of gay and lesbian citizens mute, watered down and stifled. It militates against human rights reforms.

So next time you are told that their is a single victim in these events – think and reflect. The victims of this are many!

In your heart Vex, you know I am right!

  38. “In The Spirit of Justice Michael Kirby” has written very thoughtfully and provocatively indeed about this.

Every drama has its villain and we try to search for that in the stories we write. Sometimes of course life is more complicated than stageplay.

There’s a broader issue beyond the talk of victims on the more comfortable turf of politics.

If an MP – let’s say in a country seat or outer suburban seat – outed himself does it cost him votes?

I’d like to think it wouldn’t but perhaps that’s a naive view.

But what is a legitimate issue for public discussion is whether the people are living a lie, lying to their spouse and family.

And it’s most certainly an issue if they are paying for sex, which is still illegal in the way that occurred in this case.

So we’re not giving the victim in this case a leave pass, those are very real issues for the victim to consider.

But whatever their deficiencies, they remain a victim of the ugly crime of blackmail. If society isn’t tough on crime and protective of the victims of crime, it will soon disintegrate into the vile, vicious world created by the actions of the venal young man who will forever be known as Jake the Snake.

  49. “If society isn’t tough on crime and protective of the victims of crime, it will soon disintegrate into the vile, vicious world created by the actions of the venal young man who will forever be known as Jake the Snake.”

Is vilification a crime? Your site has allows people to lie about anybodies private lifes, you allow their names to remain even though the slander is untrue and not in anyway relevant to the issues being discussed.

People are regularly attacked for being gay as though that in itself is a crime (just look at some of the posts that the QLD NUW have placed in attacking the national office of the NUW) yet you seem to think that is all fair game.

You slandered an ex QLD ALP official who committed no crime, (but she was an older women, so I guess she deserved it)God knows what other hurt you cause to people.

Are you not as guilty of the same “vile, vicious” actions of so called “Jake the Snake”?

  51. You compare our site with the actions of a blackmailer?

As frank speaking Queenslanders might say “get your hand off it.”

“Vilification” isn’t a crime, but blackmail most certainly is.

Your reference to “an ex Qld ALP official” is presumably to Linda Holliday. Our story was well-sourced and we stand by it.

We’d grant you it wasn’t the most significant revelation in the history of journalism but a good story all the same.

The most sensitive issue wasn’t it seems to us mentioning her fling with a younger man, Matt Rocks, but the fact he’d pleaded guilty to upskirting offences while working in a position of public trust at the Queensland Council of Unions.

We reported on that, merely picking up on a Sunday Mail story. We’re sorry it caused the lad some distress but we’re more sorry he thought shoving his iphone up a young woman’s skirt to take an unhappy snap. We hope he apologised.

As for the NUW posts, we’ll take a look at those. Some of them certainly do seem to cross the line.

I utterly reject the assertion we tolerate homophobic comments. We don’t. We spend too much time deleting such comments for that allegation to have any credibility.

But even the nastiest words written by the most unpleasant of commenters (and sometimes they are so nasty they take our breath away as we’re deleting them) cannot be reasonably compared with blackmailer Jake “the Snake” Della-Vedova and one of the ugliest crimes on the books.

  67. “Sex, blackmail and a big ‘D-oh!’

A PHALANX of hacks descended on the County Court last week, seeking juicy details of a gay sex video extortion case. Judge Lisa Hannan tried desperately to keep the identity of the high-profile blackmail victim secret, suppressing for 10 years “any identification of his current employment, or any elected position he may hold or may have held”.

The hyper-efficient judge ordered lawyers for the prosecution and defence to refer to him as “AB” only. She also banned from publication aspects of the evidence relating to the perpetrator, 25-year-old Jake Della-Vedova. Having established these elaborate precautions to guard the name of the victim, the judge then asked her associate to stand up and arraign the accused on the charge of blackmail.

And then, to the collective astonishment of the court, the associate read out the victim’s name. The only sound was of furious scribbling in notebooks — or did we also hear a muffled groan from the bench?”

The Age Soviet have nothing on Vex and will be disendorsed by the Comintern at its next gathering.

    Thank you Vex!!!

The Age Soviet will no longer receive the endorsement of the Comintern. They are amateurs in comparison.

Censorship is a proud tradition of Pravda.

The Comintern is poised to diendorse the Age Soviet in favour of the brilliant censors operating this site.

  84. If the male MP in question paid a female for sex who then blackmailed him there would be none of the hysteria surrounding this sorry tale.

How many married MPs have another woman on the side (paid for in cash or kind or votes) and no one in the party raises and eyebrow?

Yet again it’s one rule for the hetros and another rule for everyone else.
