ABBOTT’S SLUSH FUND: Tony Abbott helped pole-axe One Nation bigots, now they want revenge in court

PaulinehansonIf there’s anything in Tony Abbott’s political career that should impress us, aside from snatching the Liberal leadership from a party room that didn’t really want him and turning it into a great political success-story, it was his decision to wade knee-deep in blood to take on and ultimately help destroy the race-baiting One Nation party. Abbott apparently co-ordinated the Liberal attack on One Nation, urged on by a worried PM John Howard supplementing the rear-guard efforts of the Nats.

It’s easy to forget how much momentum One Nation had in the early days of the Howard government. The party whose views amplified racist yob pub talk into a barn-storming political movement, appeared set to wipe out the National party, potentially form government in Queensland (where they got as much as 23% of the vote), eat into Liberal and Labor heartland seats and convert charismatic Pauline Hanson’s national profile into a big block of seats in the federal Parliament.

It’s perhaps because of that that Independent Australia’s report this week that a co-founder of One Nation, David Ettridge, planned (or hoped) to institute legal proceedings against Abbott for his role in their downfall didn’t get picked up by the Canberra Press Gallery. <

Ettridge reckons he wants to sue Abbott for $1.5 million and to institute a private prosecution for multiple criminal offences.

On review, Ettridge’s draft Supreme Court legal claim appears to be what lawyers might call a “highly speculative” case against Abbott that essentially accuses him of all manner of legal wrongdoing perpetrated to destroy One Nation.

Central to it are claims that Mr Abbott created a “slush fund” – Australians for Honest Politics – that Ettridge claims financed unjustified litigation and legal attacks on his party.

Given the focus on media regulation this week, the non-reporting is certainly an interesting insight into the self-censorship that is frequently practised by media, particularly initially when out-there stories like this break online.

Hanson’s roughing up by Australian media ultimately led to one of its most embarrassing debacles when pics of Pauline Hanson in nude and racy form were published across the nation. The pics looked like her but were not. This is either proof of the need for a Commonwealth media tsar or proof the system works, depending on your point of view, because Hanson copped a very big defamation settlement, as we understand.

Labor MPs – keen for a laugh after a gruelling year and another horrible week of sputtering leadership speculation- told VEXNEWS they thought it was highly amusing that an equivalent to Ralph Blewitt had emerged from Tony Abbott’s past to accuse him of insidious criminal acts, even if it didn’t amount to much.

Chances are Ettridge will obtain an anti-Abbott lawyer to help him pursue his exotic and quixotic legal adventure, that was clearly the reason for making his claims public. Those annoyed with the scurrilous nature of the attacks on the PM over a boyfriend she had in the early 1990s and his slush fund will no doubt be amused that Abbott is being dragged into a similar abyss by people of the same moral dimension. We’re not, we hope both non-scandals go back to the sewer from whence they came.

Pauline Hanson plans another Queensland Senate run, she says, which cynics claim is a fundraising exercise by the former MP,  because while she’s unlikely to get elected, she will usually get over 4% of the vote, sufficient to obtain taxpayer-provided party funding in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. In an election where Bob Katter is having a red hot go at getting the populist vote without her race-baiting stunts, she might struggle to reach even 4%.

  4. About time the public found out what really happened and it will be interesting to see how the AEC will handle this. Don’t forget when they asked about legal advise they were told by Abbott that it was all good only to find out the advise he received was a whisper n his ear. nothing written, no documents produced. It seems Abbotts slush fund donors are like the IPA – worlds best kept secret. Interesting times ahead if this proceeds.

  6. Much as the ALP might delight in this distraction, maybe they should say upfront whether or not getting rid of One Notion was a good or bad thing.

If it was a good thing, will they then support Tony Abbott in fighting this opportunistic stunt?

  8. I still remember the day so long ago. The day when I came home early from school, to see my mother being rogered from behind by the Israeli soldier who was our guest. My mother’s face twisted in sweet ecstatic agony. The sinewy muscles of the Israeli’s back and neck trashing, like pythons mating beneath black velvet. The sound of his muscular thighs rhythmically slapping against her buttocks, slapping, slapping, slapping.

I hate them so, those Israelis. Yet they haunt my thoughts. Sometimes, when it’s dark and I’m alone in Middle Park, I put on my Führer uniform, play the torturous sounds of the Hatikvah, and I touch myself.

  10. I notice a couple of post thinks the end justifies the means? Well it doesn’t, We have laws and processes that should be obeyed and followed if Abbott has breached these then he must face the music, I was never a fan of one nation but I was always confident Australians were better than that, so there was never a need to go on a political witch hunt, and if Australia did give one nation that much power then it was a reflection on all of us. Both political parties continue to keep out and hinder the growth of minor party’s, that may just offer a better deal then we are getting now?

    Posted by Bradley Willis | March 21, 2013, 8:01
  11. let’s not congratulate or support Tony for anything. If Ettridge is right, TA broke the law in order to put away a party that was attracting votes from the Liberals. Overall, of course as we all remember surely, the Libs got the votes back not only by tying Hanson up and sikking the law onto her, but by taking on her policies and nailing all the voter-bigots back to the Liberal flagpole. At no point did Howard, Abbott et al ever object to her bigotry.

    Posted by Judy Crozier | March 21, 2013, 8:40
  12. ..and a couple of posts suggesting that the Libs did this to “stand up to bigots” Bullsh*t. They did it to rid themselves of a political competitor. Very grubby indeed, but exactly the kind of thing you’d expect from the same mob involved in the “Ashbygate” scandal (aka an attempt to pervert the course of justice) and “Utegate” (a sleazy, dishonest and illegal attempt to undermine the government) Maybe they should try having some policies instead?

    Posted by merle values | March 21, 2013, 8:43
  13. Abbott did this so he and his party could hijack her policies, and get her supporters over to their side. It was grubby politics and had nothing to do with fighting so called ‘redneck’ policies. Otherwise both major parties wouldn’t see the need to have draconian immigration policies.

    Posted by Andy | March 21, 2013, 9:24
  14. Tony Abbott has been consistent throughout his political career.

He is a thoroughly decent and honourable person who really believes in the principles of social justice and fairness.

He has been raised in a strong moral tradition which he has adopted as his own fundamental value system.

His opposition to Hansonism was not based on political expediency, it was based on a love of the Australian concept of a fair go and support for the underprivileged. He was one of the guiding supports behind the Howard appeal to the battlers. That’s why he opposed many of the “free market” reforms such as Workchoices.

I find him to be a little too interested in carving up the pie rather than making the pie bigger but his ability to learn and his desire to listen are positive characteristics that he possesses, If a persuasive argument is made out, he will readily be convinced that more needs to be done to encourage small business and entrepreneurship and to base industry and commerce in Australia by having a business friendly low regulation low taxation economy and legislative framework.

  15. The assassination of Hanson and one nation was committed by Abbott under Howard’s orders to prevent the party from stealing the ‘redneck’ vote from the libs. Abbott was quoted when asked “there are things the Australian public doesn’t need to know.” This is the same hypocrite who slams labor for trying to stifle free speech. Whatever your thoughts on the xenophobic policies of one nation the nature of democracy is that everyone has right of representation, even hillbillies who want the white Australia policy back. The party was legitimate, and the false charges brought against them were speculative and eventually found to be not illegal. Far from being a exotic case of low importance, if it can be shown with the disclosure of slush fund contributors that the liberals were actively involved in the destruction of a party for political gain then that is something of an incredibly serious nature. The important thing is not the case itself but the can of worms it could open for Abbott and the libs. Already on several fronts the bs and hypocrisy and generally untrustworthy nature of Abbott is starting to unravel under pressure and scrutiny as little by little the bugs he has squashed along the way come back to bite him, and so they should given the scrutiny he has demanded of others history particularly of the prime minister. Hoisted by his own petard is how history should perceive him after he fails to win in september due to his past and his mouth.

  18. Supporting One Nation was a way that people unhappy with their lot in life could blame foreigners and people from ethnic backgrounds for their situation. it unearthed racists attitudes worse than that on the gold fields in Ballarat towards the Chinese miners. If TA was somehow a part of their take-down we should all, including dyed-in-the-wool ALP & Green supporters, be thankful for it.

One Nation was a cancerous scourge on the political landscape that needed a cure. And god-willing, it was.

  19. Yeah fuck those poor people. Won’t be long before those pesky Anglos are a minority thanks to the bipartisan efforts of the ALP and Liberal parties.
My property holdings and shares go up in proportion to the number of immigrants we allow in. We need to give away more Australian residency permits, not just for those who buy five million worth of our houses.
We need to force all of those poor white people out of the cities and replace them with Asians who enjoy living like battery hens. They are not greedy and demanding when it comes to pay and safety either, unlike their Australian born counterparts because I just have to threaten to send them home if they give me any lip.
If Hanson had not been sent to jail by Abbott, our house prices would not have tripled in value since. Who cares if future generations will be lucky to own a flat smaller than the average prison cell as a result. That’s their fault for not being born sooner.

The new immigrants didn’t put in place negative gearing policies, 1+ year CGT 50% reductions on investment property, the economic gutting of regional cities & towns, first home buyers grant, lack of regional transport, easy access to home loan credit or make the mining boom happen. 1000s of builders and tradespeople were also allocated to school building projects, forcing prices up for others who needed tradies for home building. its a bitter pill to swallow, but the inept governments we all voted for are the real reason, which means we all have no-one to blame but ourselves.

  49. An improper legal relationship exists between O’Farrell and Nick Greiner because Nick Greiner is O’Farrel’s long time mentor and friend.

According the ‘Infrastructure NSW Enabling Legislation Act’ it is in the sole discretion of Barry O’Farrel whether Nick Greiner or any other member of the board of directors of Infrastructure NSW are subjected to the scrutiny of the courts for crimes they nay commit whilst working for Infrastructure NSW. (section 6 of the above Act)

Infrastructure NSW is a therefore a riminally constituted corporation set up specifically to shield the Board and employees from the reach of the Law.

Barry O’Farrell is guilty of the very same crime Nick Greiner has been found to have committed by the Federal Court.($25 milion dollar fine)

Barry O’Farrel is engaged in cartel activity in his operation of Infrastructure NSW.

Nick and Baz are long time mates.

How can we trust Barry O’Farrell to see the people of NSW right and see Nick Greiner convicted of a crime. It is the perfect crime loop writ large.

What we have here is a Premier who has set up a corporation into which he has folded a huge swathe of the States assetts wherein he has appointed his closest friend as Chairman under an Act which legalises criminal behavior.

Fraud…insider trading…decietful dealing…all these crimes…theft…nothing the law can do about it.
