BOLSHIE: University academics very glum about their lot in life

universitylife Many would be delighted to be paid a six-figure salary to research, explore, explain and generally talk about their passion in life. While University academics clearly play a vital part of the nation’s future, their union thinks life is cruel and brutish for their members.

They’re not paid enough, their hours are too long, government starve their institution of funding, the Vice-Chancellor is hopeless seems to be the common cry from many vocal Australian academics.

This Youtube video from the National Tertiary Education Union chronicling the hardships of the life of the modern academic did make a VEXNEWS correspondent cringe:

“Pampered poodles of the world unite! Make sure you check out this hilarious video about the back-breaking workload of hard-toiling academics. What a laugh. All workers should have the right to bargain but these well paid privileged people should have a bit more self-awareness about how lucky they are…”

A recent University of Chicago study confirmed [pdf] that academics have among the highest job satisfaction, below only clergy, firemen, painters and sculptors.

Those least satisfied with their job include roofers, waiters, bartenders, storemen and packers and retail check-out staff.

The video is part of a campaign by the militant and socialist left controlled NTEU for a yes vote in favour of industrial action at Australian universities. They explain:

Why do we need a secret ballot?
A secret ballot is required by law. Unfortunately we still operate under the old WorkChoices laws designed to complicate industrial action.

‘Complicate’ by asking the members what they want seems to be an insult against the revolution too many. If successful, as appears likely, the industrial action will lead to “strikes and work bans, including bans on submitting results” for students’ examinations.

  4. Uh, she works three days a week and she’s complaining about her “Work/Life” balance?

    What. The. Fuck.

If the elephant in the room looks anything like an oversized poodle then you’re shit out of luck when you want my sympathy!

  5. Disagree on this one. Whilst there certainly are some well-off academics on six-figure salaries, majority are indeed poorly paid and overworked due to cuts in funding, or can only secure work for a few days per week.

Makes you wonder whether that PhD was worth it.

  6. If they aren’t happy working at university, perhaps they can work in the public service and contribute toward better policy outcomes there.

  8. Actually, from a student perspective, this rings pretty true. Classes are over-crowded, academics have limited time for individual consultation, classrooms are shitty, technology doesn’t work. I don’t know of many students who want to do PhDs and become academics for the money and privileges!
