CAGE THIS BEAST: Brendan Fevola’s sexual assault exposed

VEXNEWS exclusively revealed yesterday that Brendan Fevola had made an unwelcome advance toward a Herald Sun journalist at the end of a 13 hour bender at the Brownlow Medal ceremony.

It has now emerged that Fevola’s misconduct that night was much more untoward and despicable than was disclosed in that story. There were many separate incidents but nothing more serious than what we can now reveal.

Well-placed football sources have told VEXNEWS that Fevola followed a woman into the female toilets at Crown Casino, leapt upon her, forced her to the floor, simulated sex acts upon her and had to be dragged off his prey by a number of people. While not rape, it was certainly a form of sexual assault, according to legal experts. Astonishingly enough, one source has told VEXNEWS that Fevola was allowed to continue his partying after the sex attack.

No complaint has been made to the Victoria Police, at this stage, although they have been made aware of the incident.

We have decided not to name the victim of the attack, for privacy reasons. However, sources familiar with her situation tell VEXNEWS that she has been greatly troubled by the attack, has taken time off work since the incident to recover and has been encouraged to seek counselling. Her family and work colleagues are believed to be furious about the incident and have been encouraging her to report the predator to authorities so he does not repeat the incident on other women.

The woman – who attended the Brownlow Medal event – is thought to be unlikely to want to make a complaint because it might adversely effect her career or her reputation in the football world. That’s a remarkable reflection on modern football, if true.

The bottom line is that Fevola is paid lavishly to be a role model and yet has acted like a sexual predator, traumatising a young woman and bringing disgrace upon the game.

If he isn’t charged, it is certainly worth seriously considering the Herald Sun’s spot-on editorial today that Fevola be forcibly retired. His conduct is now well beyond a joke and should be treated with the appropriate gravity by a game that is ultimately utterly dependent on the goodwill of fans.

One of the great aspects of AFL is how strongly women support it, in order to maintain that, the AFL must return the favour. They can’t control Carlton’s decisions and requiring them to dump a player of Fev’s quality seems very harsh. But his behaviour has crossed the line. It is time for action.

Carlton sources – yesterday keen to downplay Fevola’s crazed and disturbing conduct – are aware of the incident and are believed to be devastated by the damage he could be doing to the reputation of the club.

The club is still recovering from suggestions from its former president John Elliott that Carlton paid “hush money” to women who’d been raped by Carlton players in return for them not making complaints to authorities.

Some have suggested that VEXNEWS’ revelations yesterday – still not reported elsewhere – have had an adverse effect on Fevola’s trade to the Brisbane Lions. It’s believed a trade will still proceed, with the Lions or possibly Sydney presumably hoping they’ll not have one of the best players on their list locked up for a stupid incident that crossed the line from drunken stupidity to a despicable, predatory and gravely serious crime.

Did the women who throw themselves at footballers drag him into the ladies toilets? Or do you think he chose to go there?

  10. Why don’t the police and liquor licensing authorities investigate the regular brutal violence at Crown? Fev to kick 120 for the Lions in 2010 . . . put that in your pipe and smoke it.

  11. IF the AFL is fair dinkum about Fev’s behaviour, he should be banned from footy for one year.

  12. Have you stolen the well-thumbed cliche book from the clutches of The Rage’s Nick “where’s my Walkley” McKenzie and Trickiwickiricki Baker? Lamentably those pages covering Nigeria are now so sodden with saliva (one hopes) that you will have to revert to more sophisticated fare. All power to your organ!

  14. Fev has daughters and one on the way. Would any of you “aww yeah, she deserved it” idiots like it if a drunken pig followed his daughters into the toilet, or how about any of your daughters, then put them to the floor and simulate sex on them. You all need to wake up and stop idolising pigs like this. If he touched my daughter, he wouldn’t get the chance to go anywhere!! Only scumbag pigs, support scumbag pigs.

  16. Is this story true or another way to sell papers? If this act was witnessed the police would be investigating it whether there is a complaint made or not. That is common protocol. He probably said something suggestive to her and now the newspapers have turned it into something far more sinister.

  17. Not only should Fev be considered innocent until proven guilty but how about the same consideration given to the woman treated so disrespectfully by football players told far too often that they are really special because they chase a leather ball around an oval accompanied by too many sycophants ready to excuse discusting behaviour and make excuses. Guess what Fev, if this becomes a legal case and you are proven guilty, you deserve to loose your career, your family and the respect of all of those that loved to watch you play. This is your chance to finally grow up!

  18. Shame on the Herald Sun and the AFL – both organisations are in knowledge of a sex attack – but are brushing it off as a misdemeanour. It should be these organisations bringing in the police – not the poor victim.

  22. Andy – nice to know that VEXNEWS is known by the Herald Sun as a “Victorian rumour website”.

How about calling VEXNEWS a “fact website” and calling the Herald Sun a “Victorian rumour paper”?

  24. From Neil Mitchell this morning: “I can confirm, and I do this for this reason: there is a rather scurrilous website which has now reported what I’m about to tell you and they’ve got some of it wrong. I do this to try and correct it as I know it…”

Looks like Mr Mitchell isnt a big Vex fan….time for a Takedown!

  25. Mitchell con’t: “This idiot website is reporting that the Herald Sun is covering it up because they want to cosy up to the AFL; that is nonsense.”
“They [HS] will be furious about this website reporting it”
“I have raised this because I think its crucial that it be put in context and some of the nonsense reported on this website doesn’t become accepted as fact”

  32. And the evidence is what? A rumour? A chinese whisper? [VEXNEWS: Ah, did you miss the part when Fev expressed his ‘sorryness’]

I suggest that if this actually occured, the lady should do the appropriate thing and report the matter to Police. [VEXNEWS: That’d be up to her, not up to you. Respecting her decision, empowering her, seems to be exactly how HWT really shone through as an excellent employer this week.]

I think this site is exhibiting extreme double standards, making such an allegation against Fevola based on gossip, yet vigorously defending a retired Greek politician when there was more evidence (albeit insufficient) against that politician. [VEXNEWS: Fevola has apologised for what he did. The politician you refer to was the victim of an allegation condemned as false and fabricated by a magistrate with the case thrown out of court.]

It was claimed here that the complainant in the Greek politician’s matter was a fantasist, well so are most Herald Sun journalists. [VEXNEWS: We must know different ones…]

I am amused with this line from this story –
“No complaint has been made to the Victoria Police, at this stage, although they have been made aware of the incident.”
What on earth does that mean??? [VEXNEWS: Exactly what it says, again, like the rest of what we report, well-sourced, verified]

If they had been made aware of the incident, there would be an investigation. [VEXNEWS: Yes, that may well be right although that’s not been confirmed.]

You’re making it up as you go along aren’t you Andy? [VEXNEWS: That’d be a no, while some say we’re a ‘rumour site’, it’s certainly not true that we publish unverified rumours any more than The Times of London does.] Down on hits perhaps? [VEXNEWS: LOL, our hits are never better, so much so the server fell over yesterday, oops]

  41. Andy, your rebuttal has more holes in it than swiss cheese.

There were a multitude of idiotic behaviours on that night that Fevola could have apologised for, he offered an apology for his general behaviour, I did not notice any admissions to sexual assault or harassment.

I agree, whether or not it is reported to Police is the lady’s choice, however to put it out there as a rumour (whether it be by the lady concerned or an anonymous knight in shining armour) is quite frankly inappropriate and slanderous. I suspect it had something to do with selling newspapers. I struggle to comprehend how uttering gossip is empowering, in fact if Fevola is a predator, she is merely putting other women at risk by not coming forward.

It is true that the Greek pollie didn’t apologise, he also didn’t subject himself to Police questioning (which is his right), preferring to submit a statement which was undoubtedly carefully crafted by his legal team. Evidentiary weight? Zilch.

Is Vexnews a rumour site. Well, as most assertions on this site are not backed by empirical evidence, they are by definition rumour.

As for the number of hits on this site, well only you know that.

  42. he won’t kick that many goals next year. he’ll choke, he wanted to be a blue for life. so I don’t think he’ll play great football for another team. If the woman does report it, he may be delisted. Brisbane may win a premiership or two, but only in there near future. Where as Carlton are building a forward line for the future, and will make finals next year. And will be a powerhouse once again, for many years to come.

    Posted by blue bagger | October 13, 2009, 13:54
  43. blue bagger, you have lost the plot brother. Fev now has a point to prove and knows this is his last chance, he will have a blinder of a season with Brisbane. And in so fa as building for the future, rubbish, this has set the Blues back 5 years. Our premiership window was for 3-4 years where Brendan would have been pivitol- not anymore.
