DEMONIC PAYBACK: Melbourne Football Club helps fill councillor election slush funds after councillors splashed the cash on the elite club

casey2 The Melbourne Football Club has been embroiled in a fundraising scandal in the notorious Casey council’s election.

The Club’s captain Cameron Bruce and Club football manager Chris Connolly are listed as “celebrity guests” at a campaign fundraising event for controversial incumbent councillors Socialist Left aligned Wayne Smith, Janet Halsall and Liberal party member Lorraine Wreford. The three have combined as the “Three Amigos” in an attempt to assemble a massive campaign warchest.

All three voted in favour of a deal that effectively gave $1.4 million of ratepayers money to the Melbourne Football Club in a highly controversial arrangement that sees the club occupy council facilities rent-free for as long as thirty years.

Concerned ratepayers in Casey have told VEXNEWS that this arguably corrupt arrangement “smacks of payback”.

sleazyfundraiser Legal experts have expressed fears that if the Melbourne football club is involved in helping promote the election of councillors who’d voted for massive financial benefits to the club that they might be in breach of Victorian law that prohibits influencing the decisions of councillors with inducements.

Councillor Halsall – linked to the Labor Party’s Socialist Left grouping – championed the funding to the Melbourne Football Club as Mayor. One of the benefits she listed when attempting to explain the controversial decision was:

Community identification with an elite AFL club, and subsequent increased community pride.

Other councillors like Labor moderate Kevin Bradford have expressed concerns over the expenditure of ratepayers’ funds on the debt-ridden football club. Bradford pushed for the re-allocation of the $1.4 million to residents of the Brooklands Green estate which has been poisoned by a Casey municipal landfill with the potentially lethal toxin methane gas.

His frequent opponent right-winger Steve Beardon – who works in a print-shop but claims to be a substantial property investor – has been a loud supporter of the million-dollar gift pack to the football club.

“I’m hearing the community saying ‘we want an AFL club in Casey’” Cr Beardon told a council meeting. When challenged to name one community group or ratepayer who wanted to spend millions to benefit an elite AFL football club, Beardon was silent.

  1. Very admirable deal. I hope some free footy tickets to the Presidential lunch are involved. Beardon would be a most meritorious guest after his fifth beer.

  2. Why wasn’t I mentioned in this story? I brokered the whole thing.

  3. What a disgrace, you’d think the Mayor “who doesn’t care” Janet Halsall would be wanting to keep a low profile after her deplorable leadership in dealing wit the Brookland Greens issue, and here she is using officials from the MFC to assist her in her re-election, this is outrageous and needs investigating.

Now it is all too clear why Casey’s own ‘Blond Bimbo’ Lorraine Wreford was so adamant that the MFC deal must go ahead, and as for Wayne ‘Frequent Flyer’ Smith, as usual, he will just do what his master tells him to do.

I hope this election creates as much interest than ever before and all current councillors get the chop!

  7. The same level of footy corruption existed in Melbourne with North melbourne and Carlton Football Clubs receiving substantial grants. What is the connection between the grants paid to the Carlton Football Club and the generous offer of employment to Melbourne’s former and corrupt CEO Malouf? What is the connection between Malouf and McMullin.

  10. The corruption and sex scandals continue to surround Local government particularly at Melbourne, Whitehorse, Brimbank and Casey are the reason I believe we should get rid of the 3rd tier of government, and just have Federal and State Governments.

Federal and State governments are made accountable through TV, radio and print media.

local government has little accountablity through local papers.

Now mainly thanks to this website blog we see some of them exposed

  12. What Casey Council wants, Casey council gets no matter what the constituents want. Council staff and councillers stick together like glue to a blanket.
