Fire destroys home, just days after family moves in

FIRE has destroyed a Portsea house owned by the Baillieu family.
Opposition leader Ted Baillieu’s brother David and his wife were inside when the blaze broke out during wild weather on August 26.
They were woken by neighbours early in the morning and escaped unharmed. CFA brigades rushed to the Wattle Grove site just after 6am but could not save the two-storey building.
A CFA fire investigator inspected the blackened remains of the lower storey last week.
The couple had only just bought the three-bedroom property and are reported to be devastated.
Title documents show the mortgage was discharged on August 21 just five days before the fire.
Ted Baillieu described the fire as a cruel blow and said his brother “only just got out”.
Mr Baillieu inspected the remains last Thursday while he was on the peninsula for a media briefing.
“He (David) is pretty distressed,” Mr Baillieu said.
“They only moved in over the last few days.”
The CFA is investigating.
