LAPPED: Facebook mind games in Derrimut preselection stoush as other battles end quietly

andrewlappos Due in large measure to the Kissinger style peace-making diplomacy of Senator David Feeney and his newly re-discovered chum Parliamentary Secretary Bill Shorten, peace and hippy love is on the verge of breaking out in this round of Victorian ALP preselections.

There are a few exceptions, with contests still raging away in Ivanhoe where incumbent Craig Langdon faces a challenge from Anthony Carbines, the chief of staff to the Minister for Education and local councillor. In neighbouring Eltham the lefty red wine enthusiast Steve Herbert was under challenge from shrewd Darebin councillor Tim Laurence, who has withdrawn today leaving Herbie to continue in the marginal seat. Other patriotic withdrawals include popular Moreland councillor Kathleen Matthews-Ward who is closely aligned with patriotic friends from the SDA, who decided that Fiona Richardson, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer should continue on for four more years, subject to the approval of electors in her mung-bean eating electorate of Northcote.

But in Derrimut, in the broad sunlit uplands of Sunshine in Melbourne’s west, Andrew Lappos persists with his nomination against Parliamentary Secretary Telmo Languiller.

In a version of psyops with which we are not familiar, the colourful Lappos has written many different Facebook status updates, expressing views of the Derrimut contest that is not really expected by most observers to be close. But it’s a ballot like any other, so every advantage must be pressed.

elmotelmo To that end, Lappos offers various lines like “The time ticks Telmo, Day by Day Night by Night passes as each day gets closer, The Ghost of Andrew lingers for you Telmo.” And so on, as you can see above. While Languiller is not a Facebook friend of Lappos, and so probably wouldn’t be able to see the messages, he perhaps hopes the psych out messages while transmit from cyberspace into the mind of the normally relaxed MP.

Not all of Andrew Lappos’s mates are keeping up with the dialogue with one Johanna Crellin asking “what a ‘Telmo’ is”? A question that can only be answered with reference to smooth Latin moves, a truckload of charm, patriotism and entrepreneurship. Lappos answered differently, explaining a Telmo is a state member of Parliament, MP for Derrimut.

Which provoked the obvious next question “Wheres (sic) derrimut?”

UPDATE: Of course, as commenters below point out, Telmo Languiller has already been preselected by the ALP National Executive in a celebration of democratic centralism, meaning that Andrew Lappos’s plan to do him in are very long term. There won’t be a plebiscite held in Derrimut at all.

  1. Johanna Crellin provides a rather sad but accurate reflection of the understanding of the Australian political system. I think her next question may have been, “What’s a State Memeber of Parliament.” She is probably also a very accurate reflection of a red blooded woman who may not really know what a Telmo is but would like one any way.

  5. I believe there’s still a tussle in Pascoe Vale, with Christine Campbell expected to poll well.

  6. As Derrimut is within Brimbank, I thought that the National Executive had already pre-selected Telmo ages ago.

  12. Kathleen still has a considerable amount of atonement to attend to for her chronic undermining. She has been getting away with it for years and she has passed that tipping point where it will no longer be tolerated.

  13. Undermining???? If she lived in Ballarat she would have cleared out all the underground quartz deposits single handily.
An SDA Patriot? More like a Greenie, hiding in the ALP and behind the churchies banner. Yet she has the biggest horns conceivable.
Beware Lizzie, do not underestimate KMW!

  14. KMW needs to lose some serious weight before her next preselection bid.

  18. What a sad,sad joke. The only one who takes Lappos seriously is Lappos. He is a typical Labour party drone. Lappos is all ego and no substance. We Greeks know a phony when we see one.
