The Queensland Greens political party have shown a passionate belief in recycling after backing serial failed candidate lawyer Larissa Waters for yet another bid for the Senate in the 2010 election.
With a couple of failed state election bids under her belt, the up-market Greenie making a habit of polling poorly.
Waters is understood to have comfortably beaten the Townsville failed mayoral candidate Jenny Stirling who was once involved in a campaign to reopen a coal-powered electricity generator (before she’d heard of Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth).
A more difficult challenge was academic Libby Connors who was expected to win in some quarters and probably would have on merit but for Larissa’s superior organisation and shameless ability to claim she’d earned the gig.
The ballot was counted back on October 7th and unlike the last ugly preselection brawl in 2007 that played out on our predecessor publication, this more genteel stoush took a while to filter out via Facebook.
Waters takes an unusual approach to that usually adopted by the Greens party. Normally they are quiet about immigration issues but Larissa is willing to let her anti-development and anti-migraton cred be exposed the punters.
She told a regional TV news service in Bundaberg that her priorities included:
And concerns (in the Bundaberg community) that their lifestyle will change as a result of the influx of new people.
Yes, beating up on the “new people” is an excellent way of pulling votes in regional Queensland. Certainly it worked well for a time for Pauline Hanson.
Like Hanson before her, Larissa won but has promised many members this would be her “last turn” lest she be considered greedy by the comrades.
VEXNEWS understands that while Waters last time won by a wide margin, this preselection was a lot tighter suggesting that it will be her last turn regardless of whether she wants to stay on for the ride or not.
The Greens haven’t yet officially announced Waters’ win but they’ll do so in the next couple of weeks.
You can bet her girlish charms certainly dont work on bob brown.
Across the board with the Greens.
No doubt Adam “I’ve lost attempts for local council, state seats, federal seats AND federal senate” Bandt and Richard Di Natale will be up again. Shameless turds.
The Greens are the most in-bred and nepotistic political party in australia.
The greens party should be banned.
They are proponents of voluntary human extinction.
Andrew, I would have thought that some in the right of politics whole be happy a failed candidate is standing for the GREENS again.
I too am a failed candidate but the fascist right and the commie left marshall there resources to stand stooges to minimize my vote. I assume that will happen with the cute GREENS chick too
Hey Nameless’ Andrew Crook seems to have lifted this story from you.
All greens voters should be sterilised to ensure they don’t breed and produce more greens voters (although they don’t often have many because children are bad for the environment).
They should also have their voiceboxes and hands removed to prevent their posionous ideas infecting the hearts and minds of the young and stupid.
I know I’m being rational here, but Pauline Hanson has stood many times. As have many, many ALP/Lib/Nat candidates. The difference here is that with the exception of Hanson, the others are part of the duopoly and are therefore allowed to do whatever they like.
Jacinta Collins comes to mind. Lost the senate in Vic to Fielding, got it back in 2007. There is a Vic reps seat that has been changing between the same two candidates for the past few elections.
Then again, you dont need to be rational to hate the Greens.
Jack Little (not the American wrestling commentator on Australian television in the 1960s) stood as a DLP candidate many times. I think he was the MLC for Melbourne North elected at a by-election in 1954 as an ALP candidate, lost his seat as a DLP candidate in 1958, stood unsuccessfully for the Senate in 1958, and was a DLP candidate for numerous state and federal seats after that. He was elected to the Senate eventually in 1967 but lost his seat at the double dissolution of 1974 and as far as I’m aware never stood again. There is nothing wrong with people who stand multiple times. Sometimes they get elected. Little, for example, didn’t do a bad job either in the Legislative Council or in the Senate. I don’t think he’s alive any more so we can’t ask him his opinion on that.
My tip is that Pauline Hanson will be elected to the Senate next time around.
Her girlish charms would work a treat on me:/
Sick
She won’t win. Gillard has taken back ALP votes with her strong stance on asylum seekers. Have you heard her speak? Environmental lawyer? She’s hopeless. The Greens are pathetic.
Yeg, Greens? No hope of winning! Yes you’re right. pathetic
Larissa Waters is a dud. Why do the greens candidates always look like they need a make over? Vote Labor in the Senate and forget about the greens.
The greens are giving their preferences to Labor. They always do, so just vote Labor in the senate. You’re right Tom the greens urgently need a make over. Check out Water’s hair.
Larissa Waters is an excellent candidate. Having heard her speak, I believe that she will make an excellent Senator. Re asylum seekers, only the greens offer a humane and workable solution. What Julia Gillard has proposed is a carbon copy of Howard’s harsh treatment of refugees. We DON’T want to return to the Howard era. Bob Brown would make an excellent Prime Minister and Larissa would be fantastic as a Senator.
