CLIMATE SAME: SA Libs now have new excuse for combat

benbartlett Liberal wets in South Australia are using the division within the federal parliamentary room on climate change as an internal weapon against their right-wing factional rivals.

Ben Bartlett, a staffer to South Australian Senator Simon Birmingham, has launched a scathing attack on factional rivals Senator Nick Minchin and Cory Bernardi who have questioned both the scientific assumptions underpinning the proposed emissions trading system and aspects of its operation.

The issue has wedged those normally associated with the Liberal Right and the Left. Despite that, many Liberals have been of the view that the CPRS is the government’s responsibility, that there should be a genuine debate without reprisals and that once implemented the job-destroying impact of the new tax-and-spend regime will massively erode public support for the scheme.

But the SA Liberal Left smell an opportunity, both to condemn their opponents and also to recruit a few to the cause.

In a recent Young Liberal newsletter missive, Senator Birmingham’s staffer says his factional rivals antics will cost the Libs seats:

some Liberals seem very content to do their best to ensure an early election fought on climate change – hardly good news for colleagues in marginal, heck, safe, seats around the country.

Bartlett is not a sceptic. He is a true believer:

Climate change is real, it’s a problem and we are causing it.

He has zero tolerance for:

…the skeptics within our party are still having the debates of yesteryear… Unfortunately certain elements of the Liberal party prefer to take extreme denialist positions. Marginal seat members are highly attuned to opinion in their electorates and, as has been seen in the past few months, are lashing out against the odd mad uncle in a safe seats and recalcitrant trouble makers in the Senate. These elements greatly undermine the efforts of marginal seat members and candidates and will risk creating an electoral wipe-out should the next election be fought on climate change.

All dramatic stuff. The sky is falling, if climate change doesn’t scorch you, that dreadful pendulum will cut you to pieces.

Internal Liberal critics of Bartlett’s are not impressed.

They explain that Bartlett’s lefty ways and lefty mates were put to the sword in the Young Liberal Movement in 2008 after pursuing policies Labor SA Premier Mike Rann and minister Mick Atkinson would regard as unacceptably left-wing.

Bartlett is desperate to win back lost ground. A Liberal insider explains:

This magazine is the start of what we know to be an all out assault on the leadership of the Young Liberal Movement.

And, seeing as it is published out of Simon Birmingham’s office, one can only assume it is done with his complete blessing.

Interesting that Birmo’s staffer seems to be referring to some of his boss’s SA parliamentary colleagues as a “few crackpot theorists.”

Things are often pretty ugly when it comes to internal relations within the Liberal Party in SA, but for Birmo and staff to throw down the gauntlet at Liberal Senate Leader Nick Minchin (and fellow sceptic SA Liberal Senator, Cory Bernardi) it’s getting uglier every day.

hockeyinvite And it seems that the little moderate clique is getting organised for a massive branch stack recruitment drive, drawing in Federal Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey into the fold. Big Joe seems to be attending a function for a couple of Pyne and Birmingham held YL branches – pity that an invitation for a function with such a high pro file Liberal guest wasn’t extended to anyone outside the wet social circle.

  1. If we have an early election, I will lose my seat!!

If I lose my seat then I will lose my office and all the memories of the glorious moments I’ve had in there!!

This is one story which won’t have a “happy ending”.

  4. Just flicking through the mag, it seems those wets really don’t like conservatives – with all the brandis, hayek quotes and the like.

So much for upholding John Howard’s conservative vision which kept the party in office for over a decaed

  5. At least the SA wets call themselves wets.

IN NSW we have the problem of wets like Alex Hawke and a bloke called Scott Farlow, Scott Farlow who strut around calling themselves conservative right wingers when they actually just big Turnbull arse kissing lefties in drag who love sissy things like gay marriage, abortions and worrying about global warming.

I suppose we shouldn’t be too worried though Hawke will be ousted in a term or so.

Here’s a video about Hawke’s downfall. I’d like to see one on Pyne.

Derrrrr Nathaniel! Alex likes gay marriage, abortion and global warming does he? Where’s your proof of any of this? You have none you dumb f%&K plumber. So you might be able to fool a few of your SA mates, but all of us back in NSW know that Alex is opposed to all of those. He has spoken out in the chamber against the ETS.

Why don’t you tell your SA mates about your cross-dressing friend who’s a big supporter of Clarke? Oh, that’s right I forgot, you can be a gay and trade unionist, but still be a conservative, just as long as you are with Opus Dei.

Go back to cleaning out pipes, Nathaniel derrrrrrrrrrr

  18. Cory Bernardi has endorsed the Clarke faction in NSW as evidenced by speaking at their events.

More proof that Hawke is not actually conservative – He’s not even invited to conservative caucus meetings down in Canberra anymore – Minchin, Abbott and Bernardi smell a lefty rat in their midst.

There you have it the Hills – one of the most socially conservative regions in Sydney is represented in Canberra by a soft cock, moderate, turncoat homo.

Developing a plan to gut our countries economy out of fear of being attacked by some left wing bogey man????

I bet Mr Bartlett was nice and happy with his four votes at the agm last year against the state president – he lost control of his own people and they lost Hartley, Mayo and Hindmarsh. Those drinks with Joe Hockey will be lucky to attract 5 people.

  31. Where is your proof that Alex Hawke has changed his position on abortion?

Where is your proof that Alex Hawke has changed his position on gay marriage?

Where is your proof that Alex Hawke has changed his position on climate change?

You dont have any because Alex Hawke is genuine. You’re just upset because he is the future of the party and what you and your clique represent is the past.

    Alex won. Get over it.

  32. Alex’s deafening silence on these issues of late is all the evidence that is needed to prove that he is willing to put the interests of his career over the conservative principles that got him there.

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Hawke has been doing deals with the left – just look at Ryde, Bradfield and SULC (his little faction is jam packed with lefties – eg: Rafael, Holman, Simon)

There is only so long that Alex can keep his branches up in the Hills closed to new members, redistributing branches and avoiding AGMs.

Alex reminds me of Mickey Mouse in Fantasia frantically running around chopping down the evil brooms or in his case conservatives. The only problem is for each one he cuts down, two new ones move in to take his place.

Alex may have one this battle, but he was never going to win the war.

  35. What I’ve always found interesting is that despite the conservatives in SA being so toffee, what with an elite education and all, they nonetheless treat others more like equals than the moderates, who seem to look down upon others with a large degree of elitist arrogance.

  36. AdLib is the biggest load of trash and will destroy careers. A recent edition praised the British National Party and described increased migration to the UK as a “bloodless genocide”.

  37. BEVAN: You sound like Cory Bernardi.

PYNE: I do not, I sound nothing like him. Let’s not make this a derogatory issue that if you don’t agree with open borders, somehow you are hardline, tough or lacking compassion. I support the refugee policies that we have had over the years. We have had the second highest number of humanitarian refugees coming to Australia in any country in the world per capita after Canada. Australians generally support that. What I don’t support is compassion being equated with open borders. An open border policy that we’ve seen since 2000….you’re trying to walk both sides of the road, you can’t have it…

SCHACHT: …you’re sounding like Pauline Hanson!

PYNE: No, I’m not sounding like Pauline Hanson and that’s where the censorship board of the left is trying to muzzle this. You’re trying to muzzle the debate and say “if you support Christopher Pyne now, you’re a Pauline Hanson supporter”. That is outrageous! Nobody has ever accused me in my entire political career of ever being like Pauline Hanson, because I’m not. There is nothing in the lease bit compassionate about a border protection regime that encourages people to come here by leaky boat that causes damage and loss of life off the Australian coast. This is the embarrassing outcome of the August 2008 changes by the Government and they stand condemned for that. That is not compassionate, that is sensible management of a difficult situation.

  38. If Hawke is still as conservative as he was before:

    Why did we split?

Why does he do deals with Photios and the left?

Why is he not inivited to the conservative liberal caucus meetings anymore?

Why did he not speak out on 4 corners with the rest of the drys?

Why does he constantly evade enunciating his position on gay marriage?

Why is he actively working against Clarke (who is very conservative and put him into power)?

Why does he hang out with wierdo lefties like “Trent” and Cat Rafael?

  39. Yeah, by the way, where are those drinks being held again? Somewhere in Norwood? Why haven’t they been published in Ad-Lib. Aren’t we all one movement here in SA. If I was a proud Young Lib, why is there so much secrecy about some events?

  40. Hard to publish the details in Ad Lib if Mr Bartlett and friends keep them secret! Not only are they not in Ad Lib, they are not even in Liberal Leadership. There is good reason for that – they don’t want anyone apart from their own little clique to attend.

It was election night 1998 I was pretty new in the party and one very keen other YL says to a now candidate for a seat, ” it looks like we’ve held on to MAKIN too”. To which the gushing wet said in his smug way, “and that’s a good thing?”. That’s when I realised that the wets were not interested in the good of the party and really should be hanging out at on South Terrace at trades hall oh and also the gardens on South Terrace too.
