PATRIOTS AT WAR: Alex Hawke savaged by Alan Jones, the King of Sydney radio who suggests listeners visit VEXNEWS

alanjones2gb An intriguing aspect of Alex Hawke’s challenge in dealing with the threat from rivals in the NSW Liberal Right is that while Hawke has newly found friends in the ABC and Sydney Morning Herald, his conservative critics are well plugged into the King of Sydney Breakfast radio Alan Jones.

By 8 o’clock, his audience is usually at its strongest as people are either buttering their toast with iSnack 2.0 or driving into Sin-city on one of its many tollways. Yesterday, Jones ripped into Alex Hawke in a way that you’ll be able to listen to on Youtube.

Jones has ripped into Hawke before, although we’d not previously heard it. He makes very serious claims about Hawke, that he made false reports to NSW Police, that he engaged in forgery and other claims that he was acting improperly that must surely worry Hawke.

He even called Hawke a “power-freak”. We’ll discount the allegations that Hawke is pre-occupied with power, as that’s most certainly his job as politician to have the most amount of influence he can for his ideas and he’s most certainly not alone in his keen pursuit of power in the House of Representatives and Liberal party.

We’ve reported both sides of this internal dispute and have certainly not done Hawke’s rivals any favours in our reporting, with one of their leading lights threatening to sue VEXNEWS for daring to report on her threatening behaviour at a  meeting.

But when you hear Jones’s broadcast, you’ll see that the conservatives are able to put their arguments and present their information in front of the Sydney radio king, with him finding them most persuasive.

That alone should give Hawke pause.

A foe of both of theirs, Clive Hamilton, describes Jones:

Alan Jones is considered the ‘king’ of breakfast radio in Australia. His talkback radio show on Sydney’s 2GB consistently wins the rating slot. His audience share, political networks and willingness to use both to have his opinions heard, and often acted upon, make him one of the most regarded and feared media personalities in Australia.

Hundreds of thousands of people listen to his programme every day.

Within Hawke’s party, Jones is very highly respected too, Michael Kroger said:

You can’t underestimate the Alan Jones factor in New South Wales. I mean he has hundreds of thousands of listeners every day … [he] seeks to exercise his influence far more than John [Laws] or any other commentator. He’s a very powerful figure.

“There is a website that is worth reading – VEXNEWS.com – then go search for NSW Liberal Right torn apart by feud. VEXNEWS.com, read some of that stuff there.” Alan Jones 1st October 2009

So when Alan Jones denounces an up and coming Liberal future front-bencher repeatedly and in such scathing terms, it must be having a serious and damaging effect on Hawke.

Hawke is tough, a man of steel used to being lashed by the left-wing part of the press which used to love reporting on the activities of his group within the Young Liberals in very scathing terms. But Alan Jones is a different thing altogether.

Jones said yesterday:

“There is a website that is worth reading – VEXNEWS.com – then go search for NSW Liberal Right torn apart by feud. VEXNEWS.com, read some of that stuff there.”

Clearly a man with good taste in news websites.

And while we love a good plug, we think this all bad for David Clarke, a man vilified in the NSW lefty media but is regarded by most people beyond those limited confines as a good and decent man who fights for his beliefs. His former progeny Alex Hawke’s breach with him is a sad event, good for copy for us for which we thank them, but it must be giving their generally hopeless NSW Liberal Left rivals a tooth-whitened grin all the way from Bondi to Mosman.

We hope they work it out. Alex Hawke’s future might depend on it.

  1. 1st!

Those three, Alex Hawke, Nick Campbell and Scott Farlow, are tearing the party apart to increase their personal power.

    THE GOON (Alex Hawke)
    THE BAD (Nick Campbell)
    AND THE UGLY (Scott Farlow)

    of the NSW Liberals.

He’s dumped on him twice now. First a few months ago when he was rumoured to be running against Heffernan and yesterday because of rumours he would run against Ruddock.

  10. In a five minute vitriol condeming Hawk, saying he shouldn’t be in the party and the he is a ‘power freak’, he mentioned McCoy for about 5 seconds digging into any supporters of Alex, which he isn’t. Farlow got more of a mention for being a hack, which is pretty fair to say.

    Anon you’re an idiot.

  11. Anon (Alex Hawke) haven’t you got more important things to do (ETS, medicare) than post crap on vexnews.

It’s pretty clear that Jones hate Hawke more than McCoy. McCoy’s name was mentioned briefly once and the entire tirade was directed at Hawke and to a lesser extent Failow.

Admit it Alex, Jones tore you a new one, which is probably good news for you as your old one probably struggles to cope with its current “workload”.

  13. OOOh ouch that was a bit harsh realist. But I don’t think you right wingers should talk about weddings and David Clarke in the same breath. I think we all know how supportive Pope Dave was when his daughter decided to marry a (shock) protestant, even though Kyle Kutasi had done so much dirty work for his father-in-law. Despite showing loyalty to the point of being suspended from the Liberal Party for breaking the rules to branch stack for David Clarke. His bride (Clarke’s daughter) had no Dad to walk her down the aisle at St Vincents Ashfield and no grand reception. The happy couple were reduced to celebrating their special day with trays of nibbles at Wests Leagues Club! Seriously “realist” I wouldn’t be making pot shots about Alex’s wedding with a background like that to defend.

  15. What a load of tosh! How many people listen to Alan Jones? (no factual reference in article); and KING of Australian radio? For people who live in Sydney and think Sydney is the centre of the universe… perhaps. The rest of the nation know him as the man who called for a race war at Bondi, and as a paid shill in the Cash for Comment controversy. Why not tell the truth – his audience is as big as yours… a few hundred ragtag members of the Hysterical/Loony Right arguing the toss while the nation moves on.

    Posted by Denis Baragry | October 2, 2009, 13:40
  16. Alan Jones is probably one of the most researched media personalities in Australia. Jones never goes strong on any issue without first reading all the facts from both sides. So to say his taking the conservatives side is incorrect. Jones is simply speaking the facts, and the facts are obviously shocking.

  24. Considering how little Federal MPs really earn these days, don’t you people in NSW realise how ridiculous this all appears to readers in other parts of Australia? The NSW State Liberals are as close as they are ever going to be in winning power, & the last thing we need is the lot of you carrying on like this. Regardless of whether one loves or hates Clark or Hawke, similar comments could be made about many Federal members. Do your numbers & get it over with. But cut the public commmentary for goodness sake. In a decade’s time the lot of you are all going to look back, & realise how divisive the lot of you have been, & probably regret many of these comments.

  26. It is amazing how the worm can turn. In Western Australia, the Labor Party is now a distant memory. An unelectable Leader of the Opposition is now Premier in charge, making huge differences. Change your representative/s if necessary, & do your numbers, but cut the commentary please. One can only guess that your State Director must think some of you people have lost the plot. How about a bit of teamwork for a change. If you can’t hack it, go somewhere else & get a real job that pays real money. Most of the electorate wants the Liberals to give them a real alternative [on a range of issues]. Don’t disappoint them by continuing on ad nauseum like this.

  27. We did the numbers. And we had them.

However cannot say the same for the federal member “Senate Watcher”.

Democracy was at work Wednesday night. It’s just it wasn’t to the liking of the Federal MP, who felt the need to involve the police and the ABC media, telling lies to both.

We exercised our right to vote. the majority of our people there on the night had been in the branches for 3-8years.. Not exactly new stacks… Just thought i’d point that out..

  31. The conduct by Hawke and his minions has been unconscionable. These problems of public division only arise if the democratic forums and apparatus of the Party are beibg rorted, and Hawke, assisted by State president Campbell, is rorting them big time.
The state executive should insist the meeting is reconvened and then ensure that the party’s constitution is followed and all those eligible to attend and vote, be allowed to do so.
Were that to happen, Hawke knows he will be defeated. That is why he has conducted himself in this fashion. And he has pulled this stunt, ie calling Police, when he has wanted to thwart the will of the majority, on previous occasions.

Was it because he’d distract from the beautiful pictures of Sydney – have a look at it – no wonder Sydney was described as the best city in the world. Never seen Sydney harbour looking so good (especially that last closing shot : 10/10) – not what you can say of F O’B)

BUT – is F O’B the one to really be the Premier in 2011 ? Newspoll isn’t encouraging at all ! The Liberal Party needs to take a good look at itself if it hopes to take the reins of Government at the next election ( 26 March 2011)

    Sorry Guess who? October 5, 2009 16.53 – I’d be looking/convincing elsewhere !

  73. Wow – now they’re all (officially) abandoning the (sinking ?) ship – Peter Costello (has Kevvie offered you a job yet- like Brendan – nothing like self-interest huh ?) , Fran Bailey (Scott Morrison will be sooooooo pleased ! – from his Tourism (Council) Australia days – she (when Tourism Minister)had him ‘removed’ (to put it ‘politely’)& who’s next ?

Will Bronnie (Bishop) & the father of the House(‘lucky’ Phil (Ruddock))now have the ‘blowtorch’ (of public opinion) applied to them – courtesy of Bruce Baird (on Channel 10’s Meet the Press last Sun 4 Oct program – igniting that flame ?

And what’s Bruce Baird (the ‘resurrector’ – not of Christ,as per his Prayer group – BUT of factionalism (& for the Group)- a la Stephen Mutch in 1998 & (the Federal seat of) Cooke – now occupied by that Scott Morrison (the 2nd ‘worst’ candidate after Michael / dis-endorsed Towke was ‘eliminated’ by John Howard in that 2007 Cooke pre-selection.

Morrison , by the way, was a former Director of the Liberal Party – & who got that post by (according to (the late) Judith Barton) appointing himself from the ‘short-list’ when he was at KPMG (the ‘head hunters’ for that job)- talk about a conflict of interest. I wonder why you haven’t mentioned that on your Wikipedia entry ?

And then there’s Towke’s involvement in massive branch stacking in Wentworth in 2004 – that led to Turnbull’s ‘success’ – though we’re not sure for how long !

Oh God ( literally Bruce !) – what have you done with resurrecting all this factionalism again ? You’ve put the Party out of office for another 10 years (it hasn’t got any better – with police ‘call-outs’ to MP’s offices etc) – BUT we’ve yet to see how that familial involvement (Mike – for those lacking a vocabulary)) will rise to the occasion ? or perhaps someone else ? – as we just can’t see the (NSW) State Libs winning under F O’B. Judging by all the callers to talk-back radio today, the Liberal Party has to start from ‘ground up’ (i.e by re-building itself again)

Anyway- speaking of & getting back to F O’B (Freight on Board = Fatty Overboard) – he betrayed the Liberal philosophy (read their ‘values’)by rejecting the (NSW) electricity privatisation in Aug/Sept 2008 – & thereby aiding & abetting the lack of finances in NSW for any major (heavy) rail projects & infrastructure (again – the subject of that Four Corners program – see our entry immediately above).

What’s the State (NSW) Liberal Party going to do in 2011 (assuming they win) – with an Upper House / LC going to ‘hypocritically’ throw it back in their face because of F O’B’s 2008 opposition to it ? In any event – it’ll be worth far less than it was (then) , not to mention when Carr 1st tried it in 1998 (at the Labor Party conference – as also featured in that Four Corners program.

Yes folks – we (the Forgotten People) know where (all) the bodies are (to be ) buried – & it ain’t nice at all ! They’re a sick lot – such a shame because the public are crying out for good government – with people of integrity & the Labor ranks doesn’t look any better ! Unless they do something soon (incl at the NSW Liberal Party (State & Federal) pre-selections – the public will abandon them in droves !

  74. I was a very dedicated member of the liberal party in the hills district, until recently i have left the party simply because i am disgusted at the manner in which Alex hawke and ray williams have taken control and are running a dictatorship and power battle.
The only way to remove them is for the people of the hills area to vote for a different party ie labour, independant, community first, nationals etc. The people of the hills should also remember that there has been no infrastructure improvement in the hills area for along time because the labour govt does not care as they do not get a seat in this area. Once the seats in the hills area becomes marginal there will be political pork barrelling and the people will see results.
So ask the people of the hils and hawkesbury…..”vote with your head and not your heart!”

  76. Where did Chris Rath ever go?
He’s the only talented young person left on the ultra hard religious right. Josh is too arrogant and factionally useless, Jess is too stupid and Chad might as well have freak tattooed on his forehead.
If Chris has jumped ship then the Old Right Titanic might as well be vertical and plunging.
