TED DOES GOOD: Sparing Brimbank agony earns Baillieu kudos in Melbourne’s west

TedBdoesgoodVictorian Premier Ted Baillieu denied temptation today, by declining to schedule elections in the troubled municipality of Brimbank, in Labor’s heartland.

Many assumed – not necessarily correctly – that a new election in the Brimbank area would create chaos if some of the old – and in some cases harshly derided – figures from the past council were elected.

We’ll never know. And while most political hacks were relishing the looming vicious election, perhaps the final test of colossus ex Labor MP George Seitz’s organisational strength, and prospective carnage on the sometimes acrimonious council, it appears the council’s bureaucrats and commissioners thought the time wasn’t right.

Much of the adverse publicity attracted by the council was initially due to discord between competing council groups but then from a clueless and vicious Victorian Ombudsman report that didn’t find any corruption or serious wrongdoing anywhere. Despite the council being covered in infamy, no-one was ever charged as a result of its then sensational findings. It was a massive beat-up, partly aided by the nasty ginger group “SunRRA”.

The notoriously racist, anti-democratic and lunar Sunshine Residents and Ratepayers Association, will be pleased, mainly because they are incapable of ever actually winning an election against the rival Labor-linked groups in the West. This weird and sinister group, which spans from far-left, occasionally violent militants to Liberal-leaning Bernie Finn fans, has been the subject of Police complaints, VEXNEWS understands. They have a Mussolini-level of interest in the democratic process but their perpetual opposition to elections was probably correct in this case.

Less racist, but no less zany, are the local Greens, so few in number out west they ought to be known as the Green. The last genius they had on the Brimbank council spent much time calling for the appointment of Administrators, then expressed puzzlement and grief when they were appointed, disappointed at her loss of honorarium.

There were reasonably well-advanced plans within Victorian Labor to use the mechanism of endorsements in Brimbank to prevent George Seitz from running, or at least forcing him to give up his long-term ALP membership if he insisted on running against an endorsed Labor candidate. A brutal way of putting the crafty old bloke in his place but the fact it was being considered shows that his star has fallen quite a bit, mainly because he is thought to have been actively undermining his highly-regarded successor MP, Natalie Hutchins. Those underestimating George, in his decades of ALP involvement, have almost always come a cropper, his genteel and polite ways masking a man of steel and zeal in multiple recruitment of the kind that could single-handedly push Labor’s membership into the stratosphere.

The deferral of elections til 2015 was the decent thing to do. Setting up Labor’s heartland in Brimbank for failure and political catastrophe must have been sorely tempting…

  1. That filthy crook that is attached to his ‘biscuit tin’ deserves to have a Stroke for the years of corruption he has incubated in Brimbank.

  2. No corruption. You must be kidding. Didn’t you read the part about the kebab caravan and the car yard. If the car yard didn’t give up some of his land to fit in the kebab caravan they were threatening to knock off his planning permit and close the yard.
Great council. Another 3 years most of the players will be off the scene.

  3. Democracy should never be thrown away. They way Brimbank is run today the Chinese Politburo would be proud.

  4. The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment.

  5. so what now for the sacked councillors? Troy, Sam, Margaret, Tran and even George’s niece Heidi

  6. In replay to Anonymous, the dead of democracy in Brimbank is the final Nail of how Australia is going the way of China, North Korea,Deutsche Demokratik Republik and many other Countries Dictatorships. A call to Arms would not be a mistake. I have known Troy, Sam, Margaret and Heidi for a long time and trust them to too the best for Brimbank, not what those Commissars have done and have no trust in the new Dictators. Heidi Seitz would not stand again even if you paid a million Bucks. Those stories that have going around about George are a lot of Bull put out to destroy him and quite frankly if he would have sued the Age, he would most likely own it.

Please use spell check while writing on such a decorated site like VEXNEWS.

The people of Brimbank and more importantly the wider community want to know what happened to all the money in those biscuit tin’s?

  10. Looks like Bill Scales report on Brimbank was one of the 2 put forward to the Minister who made the recommendation that no elections will occur in Brimbank till 2015.

Bill Scales was employed last year and it is of great interest to the public that both reports be made public.

Given that no official charges were laid when the Council was sacked in 2009 in what clearly appears now a political manoeuvre , we have again a recommendation that Democracy is not restored in Brimbank based on a Bill Scales report and another independant report.

Given that the council was in the process of signing contracts with the VEC to return to democratically run elections and several individuals had taken the step at running for council as fresh voices this raises some very serious issues on transparency and accountability of Governance for what will be nearly 6 years of appointed administrators.

This site celebrates freedom , well in Brimbank the only freedom we have is to react to who is imposed to Govern us. They dictate the terms , they dictate the budget , we just pay the rates (which have incidentally just increased thanks to the administrators) .

The decision to impose administrators on the people of Brimbank for another 3 years is a political stunt by a Govt that prefers to keep the West silent and obedient to the bureacrats and stripped of vital funding & voice , yet increase rates in tough times.

Greater scrutiny and debate is required around this decision which appears a fait accompli in parliament , with scant regard to the rights of Brimbank ratepayers

  12. Scales, his nickname Snake is not a Rat that can be trusted. We first need to thank that famous Branchstacker from Richmond, Dick Slime for the dead of Democracy in Brimbank. The lies in his report of Community support is outright bullshit, most of the interested People refuse to be on those sham committies set up by those upsend Commissars, who have done nothing but Rubberstamp Nick Foas crap.

  13. So when is it Manningham’s turn ?
Complaints to the Minister have gone by unnoticed.
The dynamic duo of Maniac Mayne, Mayor “FatFella” Gough and the useless CEO have created Melbourne’s most disfunctional council.
All three are guilty of bullying anyone who opposes them, and female councillors call in sick rather than face voting against a rabbid Mayne.
Now the CEO has resigned for the second time and taken Long service leave until the end of the year leaving Manningham like a ship without a rudder. and allowing Gough and Mayne to go ferrule.
Come on Ted, is Manningham immune because your Minister is incapable of acting, or is it protected by Gough’s membership of the Liberal Party? ? ?

  14. That wouldn’t happen to be the same Natalie Sykes Hutchins who is the owner of Globe Communications listed as having “worked” for the HSU in Sydney before a sweet little preselection deal was done? Would it?

  15. John Watson is going to be Head Commissioner until an election in 2015. He is boring, conservative and has no idea about looking after anyone but his Minister, Dickie Wind and now Little Jeannie.

  16. A little know fact about that blowin from NSW Natalie Sykes Hutchins, who from what I have heard is working hard for the Keilor Residents, most who are Liberal Voters. Heard that the name Sykes used to be Seitz, but there is no love beween the two Seitzes.

  17. Hi Taiban fan. Is that the same Seitz that already printed letterhead and envelopes for the upcoming -not happening now 2012 Brimbank Council elections? And then cleverly supported the administrators re-instatement in the media.

Hopeful , maybe he can use them for 2015 , how old will he be then 90? Still as useless as he was 30 years ago

  24. The way both State and Federal MP’s are going, it’s high time that the lot of them get the Arse and are very quickly replaced by a bunch of Commissars like in Brimbank. Those sacked Brimbank Councillors where Angels against those Crooks in Parliament. The Cream of Australia, what a joke they are.

  25. I know nothing about Brimbank so I am more qualified to make intelligent comment than most contributors who make up a lot of crap and then proceed to mouth off.

As a rate-payer, I just want my garbage collected and my footpath fixed.

My local Council should be sacked for wasting my money. I am sure they are wasting money because:
    (i) they use the word “government” to describe themselves; and
(ii) there is no way it should cost as much as they claim it does to pick up my garbage.

It must be cheaper to dispose of Chernobyl’s nuclear waste out of the sarcophagus and store it safely for 250,000 years than what I am forced to pay in rates for my once a week collection of a half full 120 litre bin of putrescibles and a similar sized bin of co-mingled recyclable material (consisting mainly of unread copies of The Age and unopened letters from various government agencies).

  26. If he promises not to spend any money, Victor Perton should be appointed administrator by the Governor to replace the current profligate Victorian State Government until elections can be held in November 2014.

Posted by The Shadow knows | May 26, 2012, 22:00
  28. Giuseppe, what makes our Rates so high is that both Federal and State start something and in no time give no more funds for it. The Rate payers get used to it and the only way to keep it going is with your Rate Money. That is why our Rates are so high and it is called costshifting. Fuck those useless Arseholes running our Country. They sell us out all the time, again and again, no matter Labor or Libetal.

  29. In Brimbank, Great to hear that Georgy Sitz will not rule as he has planned. What a mess for Labor if he did.
Re Sykes, no she is no relation and her name was never ever ever Seitz
But I am also looking next door at rumblings within the ALP in Maribyrnong.
Then there is teh disfunctional ALP at Moonee Valley where half of them vote along side Labor’s number one enemy and the subject of several investigations himself by Local Govt Vicky
