TRICKY, TACKY GREENS: Greensparty says CCTV is waste of money as cops use it to search for Jill Meagher

Greenscctv1As Victoria Police scour different sources of CCTV vision for clues as to the whereabouts of missing Brunswick young woman Jill Meagher, the Greensparty contesting Melbourne City Council elections have decreed that CCTV is a waste of money and is better spent on “environmental design in public spaces.”

Jill Meagher’s disappearance has left Brunswick and much of inner-city Melbourne numb with shock and worry and sadness. Mostly our big city is safe. The idea that it might not be safe to walk home along one of the city’s busiest streets after a night out has filled the otherwise chilled-out People’s Republic of Brunswick with deep dread.

We don’t yet know what happened. We do know the Victoria Police are being meticulous and that the community reaction has been astounding. She’s been in the prayers and concerns of tens of thousands of people, from Brunswick to beyond.

And in these moments, we want the Police to have every possible tool to help make those prayers and hopes real. Many venues have CCTV. One of the bars Ms Meagher went to, had it. But the next one did not. There would be plenty of places along Sydney Road that do have it. As we write, Vic Pol have announced they have used CCTV to track Ms Meagher’s location on Sydney Road at 1.30AM.

Some municipalities have CCTV. The City of Melbourne is one of them, operating quite an extensive array of cameras, in conjunction with the Victoria Police. The cameras occur most frequently in the places you’d expect them to be, near nightclubs etc.

In the time where we can’t know with certainty what’s happened with Ms Meagher, we can know with certainty while safeguards are important CCTV is an important weapon in the fight on crime generally and in gathering evidence in horrendous cases like this.

The Greensparty’s release of a policy denouncing CCTV while Victoria Police are using it to desperately gather evidence to help bring Ms Meagher back shows the complete disconnect between their reckless, insensitive, half-considered ideological enthusiasms and the reality of life in the real world where we’re all very critical of Police until we need them and we need them they show up, big time.

It’s been fascinating listening to the ABC Jon Faine’s vigorous defence of Police in the last couple of days.

Diminishing the tools Police has to prevent crime and to bring the violent to justice has nothing to do with the cause of the environment, which is the cloak the Greensparty use to cover extreme-left policies of this kind.

We don’t need publicly-funded cameras everywhere but in places known for trouble, they are a good thing indeed. Arguing they are less effective than “environmental design” in stopping crime is plainly moronic and while the search goes on for Jill Meagher, aided by CCTV vision, deeply offensive.

THURSDAY UPDATE: Lord Mayor Robert Doyle has said he’ll push for more CCTV cameras in the city, as it becomes clear how helpful they have been in trying to find Jill Meagher.

  3. Decrying CCTV is a libertarian, anti-big-brother argument and has nothing at all to do with “extreme left”. If anything the left would be in favour of CCTV. Don’t use strawman buzzwords like “extreme left” just to get people riled up.

Otherwise, I agree with what you write :P

  5. CCTV cameras are the go. However in this case the police are now interviewing the husband and have taken evidence from the couples residence.

Also it was reported that other women had problems with men in cars etc recently in Brunswick. These women should report all these incidents to police ASAP no matter how trivial they think it may be.

  13. Using a highly emotive case such as that of Jill Meagher to support your poorly constructed argument is not exactly an exemplar of quality journalism. In this case, CCTV has failed to elucidate what happened to Jill. In order for CCTV footage to be helpful in cases like this, their coverage needs to be significantly more extensive; given the high cost of operating that which currently exists, it certainly isn’t unreasonable to discuss alternative methods of crime prevention. ‘Environmental design’ is an empirically supported low-cost method of reducing the incidence of crime. I’m not advocating for its use over CCTV as I haven’t done the relevant research, however as somebody who (for some unfathomable reason) has a regular readership online, you could seek to actually deconstruct the debate, inform readers about each alternative and posit a rational argument. Using this awful case that is highly emotionally-charged to forward your political agenda is pathetic and demonstrates your lack of integrity and intelligence. Show a bit of respect for a family who is going through hell and keep your “political commentary” (/poorly constructed, irrational shit-slinging) to appropriate moments.

  16. KOD the motor mouth from Higgins. Tony should lock her up and never let her near a camera again. Woeful is the only way of describing her QandA meltdown. Tragic case of a big Liberal preselection stuff up.

  17. Tony Abbott’s campaign manager from his 1994 election win is opposed to CCTV in his office.

  18. Concerns about CCTV are as old as Orwell. While there are arguments in favour — greater public safety, etc. — there are serious issues regarding civil rights and privacy that can’t be simply waved away (unless you’re an advocate for a Singaporesque police-state, that is). So, disagree with the Greens’ position all you like, but at least give them credit for at least providing an alternative argument.

Politicians have been using sensational and emotive news stories to infringe on civil liberties since day one. Ever heard of the American ‘patriot act’? I’m thankful that we have at least one party here that isn’t afraid to speak up when liberty is fragile. Shame on you for being so myopic, Vex News.

  24. CCT cameras are a good tool for heinz. Solve. Crimes such as te Jill Meagher case but they are also potentially open to misuse and abuse. Tigght protocols calls need to be put in place to ensure that access to CCTV data is only made available where there is a clear need to do so and. There is otherwise evidence that warrants its use.

  30. Why is this case attracting more attention than some others of a similar nature is it because she was a Journo? The real story here is this. How is it that a convicted sex offender on parole can bash someone and still stay out of prison. Someone is responsible for this womans death.
His cellmate from ararat prison reckons he is a dead man walking after what he has done but then again the system will protect him wont it. Perhaps he should watch out if an exercise bike is put in is cell area.

Our internal polling showed that this pond-scum votes 90% ALP so we can’t have their votes invalidated by them being in the slot too long.
And their prey is generally Coalition voters so it is a double-dividend.

    Posted by Marilyn | October 3, 2012, 17:11
  39. I’d rather have more police on the street walking the beat preventing crime than more CCTV to record criminal behaviour.

CCTV records not just criminals but also a lot of citizens going about their business honestly who become suspects merely for being around somewhere at roughly the same time as a crime occurs.

There may be adequate safeguards in theory against the misuse of CCTV but in practice the footage will be leaked and misused especially as a large amount of footage is recorded privately.
