UNENTHUSED: Clive Palmer’s unexpected candidacy prompts LNP concern

The LNP hierarchy seems not especially thrilled with billionaire Clive Palmer’s candidacy in Lilley, as this statement suggests.

Some suggest the maverick could even run as an independent if he is knocked back.

30 April 2012

Statement: Mr Clive Palmer

The Liberal National Party (LNP) has been encouraged by the response to its public call for Expressions of Interest from potential candidates for the next federal election.

The LNP is a democratic party in which members of the community are actively invited to join the party and, if they wish, to take on further roles within the organisation or stand for preselection as a candidate for Parliament.

That opportunity is available to Mr Palmer, just as it is to any one of our 14,000 members.

A great strength of the LNP and sharp contrast with the Labor party is that candidates for preselection are selected on their merits by local party members.
The LNP is determined to ensure it stands a strong team of candidates; people that can help us win the additional seats that the Coalition needs to win government and provide their communities and Queensland with strong representation within that new government.

People wishing to lodge an expression of interest should email preselection@lnpqld.org.au or telephone Kepa Andrews at LNP headquarters on 07 3844 0666 by close of business today.

The LNP will consider the expressions of interest it has received before opening its formal preselection process.
